It has been a wonderful Christmas so far. Due to the generosity of
@SixZeroFour and
@MacEggs I have been lucky enough to add some amazing

Looking forward to the apricot handles that he's working on! And one day: ebony!
Very cool
@Winz - love them all!
The Zebrawood is very similar to Tigerwood but a bit more of a tan base color compared to the orangish hues you get in the Tiger. The blocks Brian used to produce these handles I've had stashed away for over 15 years since I was a young buck working at a specialty lumber store. 8)
There are 6 in existence, all made by the handle master of course...

^^
@Stu Clary: Some more beautiful examples! Stu kindly sent me another zav along with a recent trade - I will post some better pics of here it soon!
Love these handles. Especially that rich mahogany one!
That Zebra is Badass!
Zav does WONDERFUL work! 8)
Gorgeous.....maybe it's the cook in me, but they remind me of the inside of freshly grated nutmeg.

Amen! In the not too distant future I will be putting in another order. I've got some classics that need some new grabbers.
They all look great. My favorite is the Mahogany handle. I wouldn't mind have a few of those. Tigers ones also score very high marks as well. I think mine from Zavod are the oak ones which looks 100% better than the plastic handles. Might have to see about some Mahogany ones.
How 'bout some vintage Rosewood? My son is a percussionist, and I restored a bunch of instruments for him over the years. I have a big box of marimba bars that are no longer tunable, so there they sit. Back in the day, marimba and xylophone bars were made from the highest quality rosewood - long before it was protected. Long story short, Brian took the challenge to make a few handles from the old bars, and I asked him to leave the holes in them to add character - I was not looking for perfection. (They are strung on a frame to allow them to resonate, each bar has two holes.) They turned out great, and my son was jazzed to add one to his Performer.

@MartyG that looks insane. wow.
Those rosewood handles were hard as could be. They looked awesome when they were done
I got some a little bit ago......the first ones to land here at the Kettle Orphanage.....
I've seen them one other people's kettles, but these will grace some special ones here......just need to choose ones I can keep covered or indoors, as there's not room for everyone to do that.....
Courtesy MacEggs for the wood & of of course, the Mighty Zav for the carving !!!

@1buckie - those are fucking gorgeous. Mac is some nice for sending those your way and the Wood Worker obviously has skills.
I was wondering if I got the address right....glad you like them Buckie!
I use apricot for all my smoking. Its a slightly sweet smoke that goes equally good with pork and beef. It also happens to be very plentiful here, the area north of town is dotted with apricot ranches. I explained this to Zav as I sent him a couple apricot sticks. Well, I got these beauties in the mail today...

I gotta say,
@MrHoss, that handle looks outstanding. :D
I have to send out a million "thank you's" to
@zavod44 for his amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail with the wood handles.
The mahogany wood belonged to my Great Uncle. He died in 1974. My folks had a bunch of it in their possession.
I grabbed some of it last year, and decided to send some to Brian. He accepted my handle request without hesitation.
With some patience on both ends, the handles finally arrived ....
Unfinished handles ..... Then some Danish oil applied .... They currently have 2 coats of spar varnish on them with maybe 2 more coats to finish ..

Not trying to speak for
@zavod44 here, but IIRC, 1" tall X 1.125" wide X 6.25" long was the minimum for one handle? I could have sworn that Brian specified the size in another post or PM that of course, I can't find at the moment.

I've got some osage orange limbs as well. Those should make some beautiful handles...
Santo your close, it actually needs to be 12" x 1"x 1.25" that's the minimum for one handle. If you need three, then 12"x 1" x let's say 4".....so twelve inches long by one inch thick by 4 inches wide.....that will make three. We don't want to cut it so close to the bone there isn't enough

Here's my two latest handles from Brian. Just absolutely stunning!
The bottom one is just incredible. It's solid ebony which is going on my blacked-out/midnight performer. Pics of that one coming soon. The weight and feel of this one just screams quality.
The top one is going on an 18 pat. pending avocado. I love that he includes little covers to go over the screws so it looks like it was riveted on, nice attention to detail!
Pics don't do them justice! The quality is just outstanding, even my wife was super impressed. Can't wait til the weather clears up, so I can get them installed. Then again it's nice to have them upstairs so I can keep checking them out!
Thanks again

That looks great,
@Darko ! You ordered more than one handle, right ??
Cuz, I see two kettles in the background that need some wood ... just sayin' ... ??? ;D ;) ;)
@ MacEggs; No, just the one. But don't worry there will be more. I was totally blown away by the quality, service & price.
p.s. in a bit you will see three kettles! I'm finally a member of the redhead club as well.

Looks like tasty nought
Wow amazing!!!......
Got these from Brian. They are Osage orange. They really pop against my '14 Crimson OTG. Quick backstory, this kettle was a rush out to Ace Hardware and buy two years ago this week when the news broke of the lid handle change for 2015. I pulled a Troy and sacrificed grocery money to buy this.

I know some don't care for Crimson but I like this color and I actually like the matte finish on it. Fast forward to last month and Brian set me up with these handles. Thanks again, Brian!

These were taken when the grill was HOT so it's a little darker here. Yes in the tradition of the red kettle, crimsons darken when hot. When Crimson heats up, it resembles a 2000-01 plum kettle. I'll snap some cold pictures later.
Nice looking kettle there Craig. The handles really pop.
My Crimson performer has grown on me over the last year. Really like those handles. Great contrast.

I always tell him to surprise me. Never seen an order, till I open the envelope. Never disappointed! I take that back. I have seen one handle, before it was sent out. That one didn't go to me though.
I may have to invest in these wood rollers and wooden turn tabs. They look amazing!
The million dollar question is how the hell do I get the plastic tab off of the top lid vent? I have tried prying it and it does not want to budge. I am afraid if I pry too much I am going to bend the vent since its just aluminum.

I got the plastic vent lever off, I was able to lay a screwdriver down along it and pull up enough to get it to pop off without bending the vent. Thanks for the words of wisdom. Now I just need to roll her out into the sun and get some photos of everything installed.

My favorites so far are the black walnut burl and the high figured cedar. Beautiful work Brian.

Which handles on your Ivory? I was thinking of Black and white ebony on mine. This maybe my favorite so far. Tiger wood, Zebra, or Cedar might all be nice on Ivory too.
I got much more handles to load up here. All of his handles are amazing. Hard choices which one goes on which kettle. Lots of fun though.

They are pretty awesome but wondering if these Lacewood I been told are actually Leopardwood.
Lacewood -
QuoteHas a very conspicuous flecking that gives this wood its namesake. The wood itself is a reddish brown with grey or light brown rays, which result in a lace pattern when quartersawn.
Leopardwood -
QuoteHas a very conspicuous flecking that gives this wood its namesake. The wood itself is a medium to dark reddish brown with grey or light brown rays, which resemble the spots of a leopard.
QuoteLeopardwood is frequently confused with Lacewood, and is sometimes referred to as such. Leopardwood (Roupala spp.) can usually be separated from most species of Lacewood (Panopsis spp.) based upon its darker color and higher density.

Are you talking about the difference between these two handles
@Speedster? If so, the top handle is the older, two rivet style that was on Webers with Metal Bowl Handles (MBH). The bottom picture is the single screw handle that was flat. They switched from the two rivet to the single screw style in 1981.

My guess: Canarywood
I will guess poplar.

Thanks. At the time, Brian told me he got the wood as a sample and wasn't sure what it was.
Sounds like some of the guys have some pretty good guesses though!
@Scott Zee I love that stripe down the center of that Cocobolo. It's a actually an interesting quick read about the origin of that tree and how it's used. Sounds like you got the best of both worlds with that particular piece of stock.
I've had to look up a few of these names to find out where they come from. If your interested and haven't already looked it up.

That is nice! Cocobolo is very dense and heavy wood similar to Ebony wood. I am tempted to order one. But, too many other wood types already. Resisting the urge.I must stop. I must stop.
Do not make a raft out of either wood... it will sink. (updated to raft from boat) ;)

You are probably right. I am novice when it comes to making boats or wood types. My interest in wood types have peaked as I have some beautiful collection of Zav wood handles going. I said that as a figure of speach, but literally wood sinks as it is like a rock.
Check this clip out to see how heavy these woods are. You will know why I said that. :) :) :)

Thanks guys! Maybe by next week, I should have the rollers and the vent tab to finish off my project " Ebony and Ivory"
Yeah, not a raft! The ebony logs are heavier than water.
Floating a boat is about displacement of water. Place a glass bowl in a tub of water and it will float, sinking into the water only to the point where the weight of the glass is equal to the weight of water displaced (by the air in the bowl, mostly).
But fill the bowl with water and it will sink to the bottom.
So you could make a boat from ebony, even though the ebony itself is heavier than water.
That's probably more physics than most people come here for, though... :)
@ haeffb - my bad, raft not a boat is what I should have said. :) :)

Thanks! I got a set of brand new Fireplace handles from Darko (Thanks @ Darko) to restore my Weber Fireplace later on. I just used one of it on the Ivory minus the wood that came with it.
Taco shell comes off easy if you just want to use the stock handle strap. Taco shell is lightly pressed on to 2 bolts. I did not use any of the stock handle assy.

I gotta say, @MrHoss, that handle looks outstanding. :D
I have to send out a million "thank you's" to @zavod44 for his amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail with the wood handles.

That is a new style, same as the new MT lid handles to mount the screw from the bot. so the top handle shows no screw caps. It was either special ordered that way or Zav got drunk or so tired he drilled thru from the wrong side. I would guess that you requested to have it done this way.
Lets see how it looks from the top. I think it would look sharp with no screw head or the hole showing.

I cannot attest to Brian's level of intoxication during the manufacture of these handles, but he was just doing what was requested.

Question, how do you keep his wooden vent tab handles on? I bought one for mine but it doesn't stay on, it's just loose.
You can always feel free to ask me direct. The issue is, wood is a natural thing and it swells and shrinks differently between the kinds of wood. Does it come off or is it just loose?

I'm obviously not Brian, but does it fit snug? If so, I would probably just put a little superglue on the metal vent tab, slip it on and see if it holds. If not, there's all kinds of high heat adhesives out there on Amazon etc... You could probably just wrap your vent tab with a little aluminum foil or foil tape to shore it up. Just throwing out some ideas.
I think sometimes the issue is with the vent tab. I have that issue with my copper performer. I've tried 3 tabs and they're all loose, but they are fine on my other grills.
It's not snug at all. The aluminum foil is a good idea. My vent tab originally came with a plastic handle. I'm also not ruling out that something broke off the inside when I first tried putting it on.
Side question
@zavod44 . Did you come out with the wood roller for the newer style lid bale? I remember you said you were working on it.
No, neither is mine on the copper performer, but they fit fine on my blue & copper OTG's.
Could always put a little JB weld on the slot and then squish it on....

@ Mr.CPHo - Tiger wood is what is called due to the pattern. Different from Zebra wood against the grain, but not really sure what type of wood used.
Zav is the man. PM him for anything you want.
@greenweb. Your performer is looking awesome! I really like how you've formed the handle strap and put a 2 rivet handle with it. I like the classic 2 rivets the best. Cedar?

Yes but what you ask is not possible. A Homer yes but not a Yellow as they were only available during the era of double rivet handles.
Ah ha. Yesssssir. Single screw handle. Wouldn't be right on a Homer. Very nice on the blue.

@zavod44 what do you have that would look good on a '74 Yachtsman? Hit me up, I'd like to order one along with a set for a dark older blue MT.

I'd recommend osage orange wood for the Blue.

Do you have a picture of the osage orange handle on a blue? Just curious how it looks and more importantly does
@zavod44 have any for sale?

Zavod,
Howdy. Looking for three handles for my new charcoal Go-Anywhere. This is going to be a "go to the beach grill", what kind of wood species do you recommend-- because I'll take it (if available)
Thanks.

@Bob BQ Fantastic combo.
Something cool about the Osage orange wood... when I first got them, they were a much lighter, yellowish color. My blue grill was under cover for a couple of months, and in that time, the wood darkened to the brown that you see above.
@zavod44, I mentioned this to you at the meet up.

A Koa handle on a Avocado @LightningBoldtz passed on to me. @Scott Zee this is one of the sisters to the handle on your Yellow 18. A third unused one that is a lighter shade than the one I just put on also exists.....it would look awesome on a darker Kettle.
where is the third one?
Just receive my handles today. Thanks

The hardware is for holding the lid bale in place when in the transport position.
Traditionally was a wood handle or a plastic both with a groove.
Brian's have nice aluminum inlays instead.

Is your handle strap one of the older, welded on straps, or the newer "taco" handle strap that gets bolted on? Brian can help you out with either type so that the handle does not spin.

Bam, those are nice! I have bought several of Brian's handles to restore old kettles but always after I get them and admire them they seem to good to put on a cooker. I finally got brave enough to put a set on my restored ranch but now have to use a cover. Funny I only use the cover to protect the handles.
Just got mine and I love it! Bubinga!
I'm with @JDD that these handles are so nice I want to keep them as best I can. That said winter is coming up and it gets below freezing all the time. Do people typically take off the wooden handles and put the plastic ones back on during the winter until it warms up again?

@kingforce you got options, brother!
1) This link is at the top of nearly every page, http://weberkettleclub.com/weber-handles/
2) Also, occasionally a post will be separately created, somewhere (here it was in "Online" sales but it's actually a "Member" sale: http://weberkettleclub.com/weber-handles/ )
The eBay link in that thread will of course consist of fluid inventory. It's the same seller (Brian/zavod44)
3) Alternatively you can send a private message, especially if you possess special wood for cutting, or want a custom engraving etc.

This guy does amazing work... I have several customs he did for me.
I just got these from Brian. Three myrtles for my 18 brownie. Two mahogany for an incoming 18 black three-wheeler. As a preview, I put one on the brownie. I love the light and dark grain with the brown kettle. The other two handle straps need to be bent back into shape before handles will fit. The pics don't do the handles justice. I'm sending Brian this nice piece of black walnut to be turned into double rivets and center screws. The grain is really cool and should look beautiful with finish. One will be going on my Folks' Performer, another onto the red 18 MBH I just got from kettlebb, and some will be going to this year's Secret Santa recipient. More pics to follow as my projects progress.

Yes, that's also Grill Giant's site for them.
And hopefully individual pics will be uploaded, or at least "representative" examples for the different kinds of wood offered, although for something like regular oak I can see where that wouldn't be necessary.

@zavod44, Honeybun and I were blessed and highly favored to attend the meetup and receive one of the special handles you made for the event. I promptly put it on my WSM and I smile every time I see it. As Ole Smokey is a cooker and not a looker, that handle is getting used a lot. :) I don't cover so what should I do to take care of it? I don't mind it getting "patina" I want to use it, I just want to make sure I'll be using it for a hella-long time.

Good place to show off a mostly-donated frankenkettle 26er. A few parts from members (special thanks to michaelmilitello), a local non-member friend, and some a cherry Zav handle set (thanks to Grillgiant).
With the older-style whitewall tires and custom handles, I couldn't be happier with how it looks. (Well, perhaps if it was a colored flat top of some sort, I'd be happier with how it looks, but short of that...)
Sorry - no matter what I do, picture rotates to horizontal. Bah.

Today, I just received my first pieces from @zavod44 for several of my pickups over the summer. Hopefully, I can get them in place this weekend, but I can't wait that long to share with you all. I've read on this thread and elsewhere how awesome his work is, but like many know you can't really appreciate them until you have them in hand.
First up, the Performer Dead Set in tiger maple. Wasn't my original wood choice, but when the master suggests something how do you argue with it? And he was totally correct.
We worked out the concept art and he made it work in an amazing way! These are scheduled to go on my new to me blue performer (@dwnthehatch 's former grill that he was kind enough to get me started with). Can't wait to get them in place! Thanks again @zavod44.

Sweet looking handles. I'd have liked to have attended the meetup, but I had to work.
Thanks for sharing
Does anyone know when these handles will be available for purchase again?
@zavod44 's current "executor70" Ebay store inventory:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?item=285496771533&rt=nc&_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l2562&_ssn=executor70
Zavod44 also does custom work. Shoot him a PM.
Thanks!
