Open. This doesn't force air, it simply opens and closes the top vent.

Is there any advantage over just turning the vent itself? I mean it looks cool but what would an advantage be?

I love it! The butterfly valve is on a bimetallic spring I presume?

Is that the way you've used it Troy?

Says in the instructions:

"3. On a lit grill, secure the lid and close all the vents EXCEPT FOR THE TOP
VENT. Remember: Tiptoptemp must be able to control all the airflow."

It would seem what they're doing is having all the air, intake & output, run thru the top vent......

Not sure said the slightly skeptical part of me...... ::)

Reason I say skeptical is I'd hate to have stale smoke stalling inside if the exhaust vent was too pinched............. :(

Huh???   (scratches head)

How do they expect the coals to stay lit if the bottom vents are closed? ? ? ?     :o
Interested in ANY offset handle SJs you may have.

My plan is to open the vents on my SJG mini some and see how some chix turns out.  With the mini it just seems wrong to not mess around  8)

i used it with the bottom partially opened, with the same concerns as buckie.

i've had it for several years now. I'd be happy to make some videos reviewing it if you guys would like.

So I take it there's no fan or blower in it?  It just gives a tighter seal for the top vent and a different way of controlling the top air flow.

I don't have one but I can see that it would automatically control air flow through the entire kettle.
The seal would be only so the device is sealed so that no air leaks by. That way the device's butterfly has complete air flow control.
The bottom vent(s) would have to be at least partially open.
The temperature-sensitive bi-metal spring opens and closes air flow through the top vent according to your settings.

It's a concept that has been used on woodstoves for years and should work well once you get your settings dialed in.

Troy

my biggest complaint is the dial setting is numeric and not a direct temperature setting.

however, i got mine years ago before the guy was selling them and the product may have changed.
He did inform me that there were changes being made (but from the pics, they look the same)

I'll see if I can make some video this week.

Interesting, makes me feel iffy about it.   A bi-metal spring doesn't sound like a great way to control the temp.  Bi-metal thermometers are REALLY slow, and can be grossly inaccurate, up to 50 degrees or more.  I'm not trying to put the product down or anything, just trying to get a full grasp on it.
