I added a probe grommet to my 26.
« on: October 19, 2013, 08:16:14 AM »
I wanted to add a probe grommet to my 26.  Here are pictures of the placement I chose and an example of the jack nut I used.  I also bought a hex head turn screw to plug it for times when I need to seal the cooker.

That's a sweet install. I may need to add that to my modified black OTG.

M6.  I use a stoker and although a tight fit, it will pass my pit probe.

I have always called them threaded jack nuts. I assume that is their correct name.  I have guru eyelets on all my WSMs but did not want to order and wait for guru eyelets.

I think the jack nut solution is slightly more refined than the threaded rod/lamp solution, and slightly Less potentially damaging than the lip notch solution.  If you do this, check your probe clearances.

I love this idea. Definitely on my list of mods. Do any of the big box stores carry them?

Don't you need a special tool or did you just use a wrench?  8)

I think you can but the tool/wrench for a buck...or use pliers like I did.

That reminds me a lot of the Nut Serts we use at work.

We have something similar to this one sold at harbor freight.

You don't have to use the special tool. They can be installed with a bolt and nut.

I'm not sure where you would find them as readily as Ace though.

Has anyone thought about matching the hole that's in the new WSM's and using a grommet from one of them?  Can you buy just one of those grommets?

I checked ereplacementparts.com and did not see parts listings for the newer cookers. You might be able to get the parts from Weber but their CS is notorious for refusing to sell anyone parts for a cooker they cannot prove they own.  ::)

Then it would just be a matter of doing a good job with a hole saw. If I were going to do that, I might be inclined to cut the hole a little undersize and then opening it up with a Dremel grinder.

I remain happy with an ordinary brass grommet. Cheap, easy to find and easy to drill an appropriate hole.
