I find sone oddities sometimes. Today was one of those times.

The first is a extra HD roast rack. It's made with some 4mm SS rod and all welded. And it is way oversized compared to a normal one.

The second has me absolutely baffled! It is a system of balls that are wired under the charcoal grate. I have never seen this and have no idea what they are for.

Thoughts?

The only thing i can think of is maybe the balls are to put wood chips in?

Or maybe the bottom tabs that hold the charcoal grate were broken and this was to suspend it above the bottom of the kettle for airflow?

Someone filled them with water or beer or something when they indirect cooked. The cups would hang over the banked coals.

Ken, the charcoal grate sat in there fine. HM, this is UNDER the charcoal grate not the cooking grate.

that's just friggin weird! I really have no idea, unless it was a misguided attempt to somehow add flavor to the cook. if possible, ask the previous owner.

My guess is they hold small brush/kindling to ignite a bank of coals placed over them. Who really knows, but it's a catchy thread title.

Is there anything on the, uh, balls that would indicate who produced them?

I was going to stamp a W on them and sell them to Hogsy. But no, no markings.
