Hello, everyone.  First real post here, but I've been lurking for a long time.

I have a question for you guys.  I picked up a used 2002 model Performer with the Stainless Steel table.  It's in great shape, I paid $75 for it at a moving sale (good deal?)

The propane ignition is very cool, but I do have one complaint.  I fire it up and then start my food prep while the coals start.  Once the coals are lit, I'd like to shut off the gas and start cooking....but my food is all piled up on top of the door that I have to open to turn off the gas.

Are there any mods that you guys have made to shut it off without having to move everything off of the work area?

Thanks!

dazzo

I have the same problem.

But thanks to this club, you'll soon have a second performer to spread out on   8)

Seriously, Welcome! And yes, sounds like it was a good deal! (Although, pics are always needed).

I don't have a mod, just the kitchen or one of my outdoor tables.

Dude, relax your chicken.

Alright, here's my collection now:

I love the huge workspace on that Performer, it just isn't all that much help if I have to shuffle stuff around.

And, as I said in my intro thread, no lectures necessary on the lighter fluid - it came with the grill and it's headed for the trash can unless I can find some other use for it other than cooking food.

Welcome to the WKC (and nice collection!)

I use a charcoal chimney and turn off the propane long before food prep is complete. Once the bottom coals are going, they'll light the rest. This would probably work with a pile of coals or coals in the wire baskets as well.

PS: Give the fluid to someone who can use it, like Jeff.  ;D

Yeah, that's pretty much what I guess I'll do.

Honestly, the biggest reason it bugs me is because Weber's design is just so darned near perfection in every aspect that I'm surprised it was designed this way!

I do the same as Hank. Probably why the new ones have them mounted on the side. I'll take the S/S looks over a minor inconvenience.

Does anyone have the link to Big B's table extensions he made?  This was a nice extension for the table, but I know they are doing some more mods to the original design

You having to lift the s/s table is one reason I prefer the plastic performers

We would not dream of letting you think that we do not idolize you and that includes watching your every move and action. If we didn't notice it would be a sign that we did not care.

So yeah... We're going to remember that for a long time. ;D

Here's some pics from a recent get together. The blue on is big b's. there is two in the back. Nice mod. Figuring out some kinks yet. It is really nice to have that extra space for food.
