Alternate chimney starter stands/surfaces?

My neighbour has been complaining about the smoke coming from the chimney when I light up briquettes and start it on the Kettle grates.

I'd like to move the chimney further away from the house and away from the Kettle.

I generally use the wax starter cubes.

Can I light the chimney on flagstone and just leave it directly on the stone?

Are there chimney stands available?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks to everyone in advance!

Guess he's use to people using gas ques. For me it is what it is. There's smoke while the coals light and if my neighbors don't like it they are free to go inside till its ready.

You could light it in a SJ.

I know.   Our lots here are only 18 feet wide and it's my neighbour on the other side of or semi-detached.

The smoke only lasts 10 minutes.

Just looking for alternatives.

Right.  And move the Smokey Joe away.  That is brilliant!  Perfect.

A different coal might help to. I find that the Weber hardly smokes at all.

Funny, it was the Weber Briquettes I was talking about being really billowy.

Is KBB and Kingsford Professional worse?

The lump that I've used isn't bad at all.

I would start with lighting the chimney on a pizza pan or other metal disk so you can light it anywhere on your property.

Also been trying different charcoals recently, the market is crazy now, so many choices- Jealous Devil definitely does not smoke as much as Webber charcoal. It cook well to but is very $$ pricey

Thanks for this.

The Fogo doesn't smoke at much at all, but it too is very pricey.

I would continue with the Weber coals and just start my chimney on a Smokey Joe in another part of your yard like others have suggested. Maybe offer up some good barbecue to the neighbor once in awhile and he may not complain about the smoke.

Start smoking cheap cigars outside when he is around or has the windows open.
Pretty soon, he'll stop complaining about the charcoal smoke.
