Advise needed for abused red Sequoia
« on: April 21, 2019, 04:45:01 PM »
I recently picked up this Sequoia.  I am at a loss on what I should do with it.
I have considered a few minor tweaks and selling as is.  I have considered a
full on resto, keeping or possibly selling.  I have had a couple of offers to
sell the bowl, lid and ash catcher only and shipping out of state or overseas.
I really would like an honest opinion from folks here on what you would do.
My first inclination is to keep it intact and not separate pieces though.

There is damaged in one of the corners.  Looks like a dog or squirrel chewed the
hell out of the wood.  The entire top has had a crappy replacement with deck boards.
The previous owner spilled green paint all over half of it, and the bowl and lid have a
few war wounds.

What do y'all think?

What’s in your heart? Sell it or keep it?

While its a very cool old grill to have, its not practical for me really.  I have a red kettle and a blue Performer and couple collector pieces.  While sacrilege here, I don't need 50 kettles.  I restore old Gennies mainly but wouldn't mind doing this one.

If I had the woodworking skills/tools I'd rebuild it. It's rough for sure, but would be cool when done.

I’m very much a “keep intact” kinda guy with rare pieces, but truthfully, the Weber world needs parts kettles.  It doesn’t sound like you really wanna keep it, unless you do a full restoration.  If you can help out an upstanding member, or two, you shouldn’t have any regrets piecing it out.

Obviously looking for a Glen Blue (who isn’t?😂).

Looking for anything Happy Cooker, including any re-branded as Montgomery Ward.  I’ve amassed a nice collection, but I’m missing a few still.  Let me know if you can help a fella out🤞

It's really up to you.

There are a few Sequoia carts out there that either need wood or need a tabbed bowl. Your cart's top wood looks to have been replaced. That old growth straight redwood on some of the other sections isn't easily had anymore.

You could move it as-is and it would make a nice project...or part it out and maybe help a few guys finish theirs.

I agree with what @Mike in Roseville said.  I got help finding a tabbed bowl for my sequoia (after looking for over a year).  I'm currently parting out a cart to help others restore their sequoias.  Hand off the whole thing or don't feel bad about parting it out.  That's a killer red bowl, even with the wounds.

I need to snap a couple of other pics.  It has the arm that holds the ash catcher, but I do not
believe that it has the correct ash pan.  The pan that is currently in it looks legit from a distance
and fit perfectly, but it has some kind of weird etchings on it.
The worst part of all for me on this is, I just don't have a need or a space to put it, if I did have the time
to make it new, and I simply don't have the time either.  I love the idea of owning a perfect Sequoia, but
it just isn't practical for me, if that makes sense.
I may end up re-posting this in the buy/sell/trade section.

Sent you a PM...

Mike In Roseville had a cool idea... If you do end up parting up the Sequoia, it would be awesome to make limited edition WKC handles out of the original Sequoia wood.

If you really, really like the Sequoia, and want to keep it, but don't have time to mess with it, you could always see about farming out the restore.

If to you its one of the "its cool but not cool for me right now" grills id just pass it on to a grill fella. Im not saying give it away but if your not into it much just pass it on to a member who will take on the project for what your in it. Kettle karma will come back around in your favor

Kettle karma will come back around in your favor.

Some folks may tend to roll their eyes at this statement, however, I am a big believer
in the Kettle Karma.  I have personally witnessed it on several occasions.
