Triangle Rust

In the last year, I have secured and restored several vintage kettles.  Rusty triangles are almost always the most time-consuming portion of a clean-up (ashpans are close).  I use the WKC webpage as a guide, and generally, I've had good success removing rust.  After a year, though, I've noticed rust re-appearing on previously cleaned triangles.  I do cover my kettles.  I've been contemplating giving the spoke a light wipe down with WD40 to help.  Seems like it's continual maintenance item if I want to keep them rust free. 

Any other suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Spray 'em down with a non yellowing semi gloss clear enamel.
Almost everything that lives outside at our house gets the treatment.
I even use it on slightly rusted things to preserve the patina.

I have had really good luck with just rubbing them with tin foil. Some of the real hard bits and crannies get a wire brush on the end of the impact but then just dry tinfoil will clean up most triangles in minutes.

Clean 'em up with above methods, then clear coat. I've gone to the dark side on a couple that were just a mess, and painted them with black Rustoleum. Looks GRATE!

Have them powder coated? Something that small wouldn't cost much.

The ones I painted with Rustoleum have held up for years, and for a few bux a can, it can't be beat.
