Likelihood of Summit WITHOUT Gas Assist?

I'm leaning towards the purchase of a Summit, but I'm wondering if anyone has heard any developments regarding the availability of a Summit without the gas assist feature. I don't think I'd use it all that much, and if my hypothetical model came to fruition, I'd imagine it would be available for a few hundred less than the current models. Thoughts?

I doubt it. It's considered their premium product . And as such...in the mindset of a designer, it ~should~ have a built in gas lighter on it....Even though I think lookswise, a standalone without gas assist on tri legs would look great.

My current beef with the Gas assist it that it makes the cover *flat* in that area, so whenever it rains, water does collect/pool on the flat area, no matter how many times, I tweak the cover so it's shaped like a dome

Yeah, I guess I would be surprised if they did come out with such a model without the gas assist. You bring up a good point regarding the pooling of water, though I'm likely going to spring for the Grilling Center version,so I'm sure the table will also allow for some water to pool up.

On my offset, I plop a kids size basketball on top of the firebox.
It eliminates the flat spot so water can't pool.

With all the rain lately it's been one less thing
to dump water off of to keep the skeeters away.

I think the gas assist on the summit is a waste, I wish they would sell a base model without it.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

Can you simply not install it during setup, and just plug the hole with something?

I'm sure even if they did make it without the gas assist, the price drop would be negligible at best!
Its amazing how quickly one weber kettle turns into more than a dozen!  Always open to grabbing something interesting so let me know what you've got!

I agree. Its worthless on the summit. However, I love it on my performer.

I'll buy the box and regulator off someone if you want to get rid of it.
