How to Clean Really Dirty Grate
« on: May 18, 2018, 08:31:47 AM »
I have let my Weber Performer grate get way to crusty and it won't wire brush off.   How do I get it clean again?

How clean are you trying to get it?
All the way back to shiney?

Ain't gonna happen.
Even SS turns color with heat.

Take a welding brush to both sides
Give it a rinse, wipe it down with a towel
and cook away.

Scrape it with a metal spatula or scraper. That should knock most of the thick stuff off. Then be more diligent about brushing your grate before and after your cooks so it doesn’t get thick like that that again.

Is it weird that I actually prefer my grates like this? @kettlebb and I have a (probably wrong) theory that the gunk helps protect the played steel from rusting. We are hoping it acts as a water blocker. Are we ridiculous and just trying to justify our laziness of scraping?

That looks to be a SS GBS.
Maybe it's just me but
The rod diameter looks larger.
Is that true?

Take a mapp gas or propane torch and burn
the residue to ash and brush off.
