Need help on a restoration...of a Ranch Kettle
« on: March 29, 2018, 06:18:16 PM »
I recently acquired a ranch kettle
That looks like it wasn’t abused but likely neglected for quite a while.

Aside from a broken caster there is no structural issues except a lot of surface rust, notably on the rim of the lid.

The ranch is awesome but I don’t do big cooks often so I may restore and sell. I would like it to be as good cosmetically as it is structurally.

What’s the best way to address the rust ring on the lid rim? Is my best bet scrubbing as best I can and then oiling and heating to turn black or should I touch up with high heat paint?

Get some high temp black glossy spray paint .. mask off the rest of the lid and address the rusty parts .. the grate. Apply some veg shortening ( crisco) or coconut oil ..

I wouldnt bother spray painting the rim if you're just gonna flip it. I would just knock off the rust with a stiff bristled brush and rub oil on it.

So i went the oil route and its worked out pretty well. I used cooking oil and a torch on a few key spots and the handles and then heated the whole kettle with some lump in a ring around the end and it worked out pretty well. Pics to follow.
