The low hanging fruit.
« on: May 13, 2013, 07:53:42 PM »
I picked up some 0000 steel wool and a stiff scrub brush today and started to work on a restoration. The first thing I tackled was the ash pan on my first Weber.

I have no idea how it got that bent up.  ???  ::)  :-[ I worked on it a bit with a rubber mallet and piece of wood and made surprising progress. Then I started polishing. I need to get some coarser steel wool.

I set that aside and decided to go for some lower hanging fruit and chose the CGA since it was probably the least used of all of my grills.

Here it is as I acquired it.

I disassembled and scrubbed first with soap (Dawn) and water. Then the steel wool to get the stubborn stuff off the shell. I disassembled the bails and vent covers and polished them with steel wool, some nevr-dull and finally some nu finish. Here is the result.

OK, wasn't that bad to begin with, but it's nice to see some progress.

Can't wait to see what the ash pan looks like when polished up..
I like how the Imperial Sequoia is peeking out from the back. It's as if its saying, am I next?
Nice work on the GA..  8)

I used 0000 wool, brillo pads and a little CLR and mothers mag on my dirtiest ash pan. Came out pretty shiney. They are the biggest PIA to clean, but the end result is worth it. I almost want to cover mine in foil when cooking to keep it clean. :D That GA turned out nice! Same year as mine.

Maybe some wax and then it should rinse off after.. Or get a decoy ash pan to use when cooking..

I have started the foil method,  because of THE PIA cleaning them.

Nice work on the CGA. I'm looking forward to the after on the ashpan. Good camera work too- My first SLR was a D50 so it holds a special place in my heart.

I use this wheel on my cordless drill first then 0000 steel for the final polish
I think it's made of plastic
I'm only 2 or 3 kettles away from being that creepy guy down the street with all the Webers

Yep a forest green 22 Silver. You'll have to clean that one up. ;)
