First a little back ground info ... I NOW live in The Netherlands (Holland) in Europe and Weber does not have the super long history here.
That being said .. when I saw this posted here for sale and saw the handles on the kettle I jumped on the phone and called the seller knowing full well that my lovely wife who is so patient with my addiction with Weberitis is going to go ape-shit because I want another grill just because it can.
I saw the fade on it in the photos and did some quick thinking over how many times I have seen a MBH here..NEVER!  This was going to be mine even if the wife throws a hissy fit!
My son picked it up and now I can put my smokey little hands on it ! The question is to everyone.. what is the best plan of attack on this beauty ?
My first thought is to do a light outside clean up and a standard inside bowl cleaning and use it.
How clean is clean on the outside, WWYD? Do I polish the legs and repaint the triangle? What about the ash Frisbee? polish it or just clean it?
What should I do on the out side of the kettle? Just clean it with soap & water or try to 0000 it to bring back some color?
Looking for some RRR advice for something so old and rare here.
This is not my first RRR kettle.. but my oldest to date. Speaking of dates... I'm guessing at 1978? What do you think?

Thanks for your time.

Do? Not a damn thing. Aside from cooking on it. That is a beauty.

Yeah, polish some things up when you get time - but that kettle doesn't look to need anything to be a beauty. Everything looks straight and having lived a good life.

Congratulations, that is a cool kettle. And you had to go meet a Netherlander somewhere and speak Netherlish to pick that up? Outstanding.

Travis

Yeah, I agree. I wouldn't worry about it. Keep the fade. Like Jon said, maybe hit the legs sometime. I like a shiny lid vent and glossy lid handle, but that's just preference. That's a damn sharp faded black, man. Congrats.

Just cook on it "satisfaction guaranteed"
Seeking a Black Sequoia I know I know, I'd settle for just the tabbed no leg grill

That is an amazing find! Love the faded black

I agree with all the above. I personally don't see any reason to fully detail a grill that you intend to cook on. If you were putting it in the living room I'd have a different opinion. Cookers? Scrape the lid and bowl and start burning coal. Congrats on the find!

Looking for: Red MBH 26"(The Aristocrat), Chestnut-coppertone (The Estate), Glen-blue (The Imperial), and The Plainsman.

That right there is one of my BIG problems now. This is a old and cool kettle, but I have my Smoke Gray MT as my big grill, my pimped out JJ with GBS and my Smoky Joe. I don't really NEED another drink.. or kettle. I just could not help my self. Now I don't know what is best for it.
Cooker (and deal with my wife) or RRR & flip it to buy more meat?

If MBH doesn't show up often then never sell it. Cook on it till it's dead in about 30 more years.

A kettle if well cared for can outlast the owner.

I'd polish the legs and vent to a shine, make the wheels and handle pop and the hit the grocery store.

And I love to paint and mod things...

"You're hungry? I'll fire up the grills..."

Hell Fire Grill

Theres NOTHTHING anyone can do to make that kettle more beautiful than it is right now...

Its never been razor rashed or molested by steel wool and doing either will only remove its character, which would make it "just another old black grill".

IMO
You can't always get what you want....but if you try sometimes you get what you need

vwengguy

Here you go.. quick clean and I'm happy.
