Organizing some kettles for the meetup Saturday, and took the time to measure a few things.

First up is an early Wood Dale 22.5 kettle The grate is a one-piece, no hinged sections. 33 bars across.

Each bar measures 0.192 in diameter, with 0.384 between bars.

The grate weighs in at 6lbs 3-5/8 oz:

And the lid weighs in at 6lbs 13-1/2 oz:

Next up is an late 90s 22.5 kettle The grate is a standard hinged style. 34 bars across.

Each bar measures 0.161 in diameter, with 0.395 between bars.

The grate weighs in at 5lbs 2-1/8 oz:

And the lid weighs in at 6lbs 6 oz:

Finally we have the Gourmet Grate from a current MT. 34 bars across.

Each bar measures 0.216 in diameter, with 0.345 between bars.

The grate weighs in at 8lbs 3-3/8 oz:

And the lid weighs in at 6lbs 13-3/4 oz:

Interesting that the lid weight for the Wood Dale and the new MT are nearly identical. I would have guessed the WD was heavier by a good margin. Feel free to add your own weights and measures. We often talk about this, but it's never captured in one place. Maybe not entirely scientific give the variation in scales and calipers, but it's close enough for me.

How do you keep them all so clean?

The two modern era grates are unused. The 55+ year-old Wood Dale has seen very little use, maybe a cook or two, and one of them was mine.

You can't always get what you want....but if you try sometimes you get what you need

Thank you for starting this. Very interesting to see the comparison. Would be interesting to see the weight between the various generations of 26ers as well.

I have a modern version 26er. (Well, it has a welded lid handle with taco inset, but close to today's version.)  I'll weigh the grate and lid when I get a chance.

2009 DE-code 26er I have stacks up like this:

Stainless steel, 40 bars across the flip-style grate. Bars are 0.161 in diameter and 0.393 between bars.

Grate weighs in at 7lbs. 3oz. and the lid at 11lbs. 11-1/8oz.

Interesting that the 26 grate weighs less than the 22 GBS.  I've  blown through a couple of 22 hinged grates but not my GBS grates...those suckers are heavy duty and hold up really well.

Agree - and that reminded me to add GBS to the WKC Glossary. Thanks Mike!

Rebooting this thread for those who are new. @LightningBoldtz if someone can bring a digital scale and calipers to @zavod44 it would be fun to weigh Ernie's lid and grate. My guess is the lid is much heavier than anything recorded to date. I would do it myself if I could be there.

I have a digital scale I will try to remember to bring it.

I noticed that the grate on my pat. pending 18 was also thicker and heavier the my brand new JJ.
The new cook grate has less metal and is only .135 for the horizontals and the ring and handles are .160.
The old grate has been used for years and is  .180-.190 everywhere and 3.5oz heavier.
