Yellow 18 1973?
« on: June 27, 2017, 05:11:17 PM »
Picked up this yellow 18 today on Craigslist for $50. Handle deteriorated and ash pan missing. Has real strong leg sockets. Wheels look original for what I think is a 1973 model. Haven't dealt with replacing 2 rivet handle before. Where do you obtain replacement rivets? How do you remove originals? Any advice appreciated...

Beauty find there dude. Small hacksaw for the rivets...push up on the bottom of the handle and go easy. Get a new handle off of zavod44 - it will have screws with covers rather than rivets.

Would a bolt cutter, or tin snip be easier?
Still need a 22” yellow

I use a dremel with a cutoff wheel for handles. Nice yellow. Congrats! Oh, when you order a handle from zavod, buy some whitewall decals from him as well.

O.K. thanks. So it's screws with plugs. I'll check on the handles from zavod44.

Thanks AZ Monsoon. Hadn't heard of the decals, thought people were painting. I guess if decal doesn't work out I can paint always paint later.

The decals are only a few bucks when you order them at the same time as the handle. Hope you don't mind me showing off. We have twins. Here's mine with one of Brian's handles and the whitewall decals

This is without the little rivet plugs that Brian sends with his handles

That looks sweet! Original pan? I'm gonna need a pan too. I saw that there was someone in Austria with reproductions but think he's out of the 18's.

Yeah, I got lucky and mine came with the original pan. It sounds like they may be doing another order on ash pans towards the end of the summer. You can use a standard 18" pan off Amazon or wherever, it just won't have that original look.. You can post a wanted ad in the members section as well. You never know.

I don't know how much you've looked at yellow's, but one reason so many people like them is because they change color to an orangish when they get hot. You can see it starting to turn in my pic above on the bottom of the grill.

Huh. That's interesting. Under the "ILL" writing on the lid vent it looks like your vent is messed up a little bit. I always just assumed mine was messed up a little from use or something, but yours looks to have the markings similar to mine.
