26 Kettle
« on: May 30, 2017, 04:32:15 AM »
I am considering a 26 Kettle. I have seen some comments that it is hard to get the 26 Kettle up to higher temps. Is it for lower temps only or does it just require a different procedure?

Get the 26r. I'm not familiar with that concern of low Temps. I have a 26r and I could possibly see that there would be a difference between it and a 22 but its a different grill. Use more charcoal if it becomes a problem. There's a learning curve with any grill. I don't feel that that argument should overshadow the increased capacity of both food and fuel the 26r will provide.

My modern 26er does cook differently than a 22 but you can cook the full spectrum.  Low and slow works great. Pretty much the same as a 22 but with more room. Mid range 375-425 isn't a problem.  The 425-500+ is the range it needs a little help. You just have to make sure all vents are open and I also cook with the lid cracked to cook at 500ish for extended periods. Direct burger and dog cooks with the lid being opened frequently are not a problem.  If you want more real estate for smoking and cooking whole meals on one grill, the 26 is a great option.

No issues with mine, it's different than the 22 inch so there is a bit of a learning curve. Anything that can be done on the 22 can be done on the 26. I have had 0 issues with temp.

Get one, you will love it.
The issue as I see it with temperature. Most are still using ONE Chimney of charcoal to cook with, same amount used on your 22.  The Bigger Grill will not get as hot as a 22 using the same amount of coals.  Make some scaled up charcoal baskets and a second chimney of coals if you need a hotter temperature.  OR use a third charcoal basket.

I do not have any issues with temperatures myself. It will hit 350+ on a single Chimney of charcoal. Where I might want a little more heat is using a Smoke EZ to grill on.

I recently got a 26 and love it! One of the things I added was a Slow n Sear XL for coal management and I haven't had any issues with temp control. The extra space is amazing.

I got mine last week and I love it. No temp issues.  I am sure I could hit higher temp but with bot. vent half to 3/4 open and top full open, lid temp gauge showed 400f and the external cooking grate temp showed about 300f for 1.5hrs steady.

Get one! Not much different than 22" except almost twice as much cooking space.
