Hello
I have a 10 year old weber kettle bbq (not sure of range)
The lid doesn't have a built in thermometer which I notice all of the current models seem to have
Is it just a simple job to buy a thermometer kit, drill a hole in the lid and fit it or is it not as simple as this.
Any ideas, tips or comments would be welcome

Yes it's that easy.  I put masking tape over the area. Marked, then drill with 1/8" bit then work up to desired hole size with larger bit

Hi there new WKC member! I wouldn't drill a nice one. You could  put a long stem Therm in one of the vent holes in the lid. That lets you know the temp. closer to the grate level. Better yet a remote digital therm with a probe on a wire. You can wrap the top of the probe with foil and stick it in one of the lid vent holes also. Digital can be much more accurate than some of the cheaper dial therms, plus you can monitor the internal temp of what you are cooking(the key to knowing when food is done), Nicer dial thermometers can get pretty expensive. I have a little remote digital I think cost around $20 and it works good. Could probably get a dual probe for around the price of some of the better dial therms. Still a dedicated lid Therm can be nice.

Keep it oem and make it look factory. A lid therm just lets you know if it's running too low or too high or in the neighborhood you want. A lid therm and an instant read probe is good for starters.

   Apply tape
   Get center of handles
Measure down from tape 4 1/2" and mark
Now I use a framing sqaure and combination sqaure to line up the center handle mark down to the 4 1/2" mark. Drill to the appropriate size and enjoy. I hope I didnt flub these pics and words.

It's a tool make it a better tool.  I fab stuff all day, no tape, use the direct size and drill once.  Rubber grommet and insert probe.  You're not building a piano, have fun

right, see the photo.  I use a rubber grommet as just an extra seal for the new thermometer.
