I picked up the Kettle in NJ from @james1787 , who was kind enough to agent for me.  I was in town for a few days with my family.  We drove up to NJ from GA....so I had to put the Wheels, Ash Pan, Cover, Triangle and Chimney in the car top carrier with the luggage, and strap the Kettle on top of the carrier; the lid was inside the bowl.  It was a 2 day, 14 hr. drive, with rain in the mix.  But it worked well....

This is how the Kettle looked unpacked....not bad....bowl and lid are decent...handles are dark and worn, some rim rash, grates very rusty

rusty triangle

ash pan has lots of dents and caked on ash

better view of the bowls....ash sweep nut is rusted solid

bowl

lid is not too bad inside, but some of the carbon is on solid and not easy to scrape out.

finished it today...new lid bale rollers, cleaned up the ash pan, new ash pan clips, new ash sweep, cleaned up the triangle, lid and bowls cleaned up, got rust off the grates, lightly sanded and refinished the handles, cleaned up the legs and wheels, used lard to oil up the interior and the exposed metal on the bowl and rim....

here she is....

the phone camera was acting funny, so the pics look a little odd...but you get the gist...thanks for looking

Nice save and restore! Was the bottom of the bowl shot with a shotgun?

@Foster Dahlet WOW! That cleaned up great! I'm so happy to see it made it home safe and I am amazed by how nicely it cleaned up. That triangle and grate look fantastic! I am looking forward to hearing about the first cook on it. Excellent work!

S H A Z A M ! ! Great save you've  got it glowing. A can of high heat spray paint to cover up the chicken pox on the bottom and you would have "the world's mightiest grill". Lol

Nice clean up work! Despite some beauty marks on the outside, inside the bowl looks great.  This OTP looks great all cleaned up. Congrats!

OK....did my first cook on the OT+ (no pics)....Kettle "Fried" Chicken, from a recipe I found on this site....chicken turned out excellent

Random thoughts after the cook:
1. I was not prepared for such a dramatic color change when the Kettle got hot.. Wow!  I now can see the appeal that so many find in owning a redhead.

2. This is the first time I have had a kettle with an ash pan.  I can see how wind would be a problem.  Also, with the ash catcher assembly, I can tell exactly how open my lower vents are based on the position of the handle in relation to the ash ring.  But, I do appreciate the ease of removing and dumping the ashes from the ash pan and the ease of doing so makes it less likely for me to ignore the job of emptying the ashes.  Also, I was not prepared for the surprise of hot coals falling out into the pan during the cook.  I found it startlingly amusing.

3. I have an extra hinged grate that I will use on this kettle.  But for the first cook, I wanted to use the grate it came with, which was not hinged.  I now have a greater appreciation for hinged grates.  How did we ever get along without them?  Unhinged grates suck.

4. Lard on the grates works well.

5. The plastic work table goes well with the OT+, better than with my OKP.  The OKPs two handles make it difficult to accommodate both the slide aside lid bale, and the work table.  So, the work table is now staying paired with the OT+.

6.  Did I mention the color change?  Awesome.

I like my Kettles like my coffee....strong and black.
