I'm just looking for anyone that can show photos of porcelain chips, not crazing... on the grate strap weld points of the outside of the bowl.  Just looking to document high heat damage from banking charcoal against the bowl of colored kettles.

Thanks

Both used as fire pits. Can't get much more high heat damage than that.

Do you mind if i use the higher resolution of these in an upcoming WKC video?

Cellar2ful

Sure, no problem.  Need me to email you high resolution original files @Troy?

I got a Pizza Que for someone that is using a blue MT I got for them.  I am trying to explain to them to be cautious about how they are going to bank their coals against the bowl and how high heat can chip out the paint at the grate strap welds.   Wow..that sentence sounded bad!! :)

I must be doing it wrong. My mid 2000's ots doesn't show any signs of damage and it's been left outside and has had hot fires banked frequently the whole time. It's only had a wood fire in it a couple times for warmth during get togethers. Not cooking.

I've also only used it once for pizza and it gets pretty freakin hot. I could see that doing damage.

I'm with the Hoosier. I've banked coals on almost every cook in a 2011 green otg, many of them extremely high heat, and I've never seen the slightest sign of damage or wear. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but either it takes a very long time or there's something different about the newer kettles.
It seems the rust develops because oxygen and moisture are able to get through the enamel and cause corrosion. If high heat causes expansion & contraction at different rates in the metal and porcelain then I suppose cracks and chips could develop. I just haven't seen them.
I have an '88 red kettle, and I avoid banking coals in it because of the concerns discussed on this forum. I want to preserve it as best I can. But it's likely that I'll always bank coals in my main cooker. It's just part of how I achieve high heat while maintaining two zones.

Do the stock baskets prevent this? How about high heat with the slow n sear? Wondering if the issue is the heat near the bowl or the coals making contact.
