Upper Deck Grate
« on: February 07, 2017, 04:33:10 PM »
Finally got a chance to use my upper deck grate.
https://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Kettle-Charcoal-Grilling-Accessory/dp/B01IU7HJNU
I actually didn't need to use it, I only cooked 2 racks of baby backs, but I figured I might as well as try this thing out and get some grease on it.
Nothing special here, just 2 racks.

Snake with some apple. Look at all that room.

About 1.5 hours in. Running steady at 250.

3.5 hours in, starting to look good.

4.5 hours in, a tiny bit of sauce.

Look at that room again.

They are done.

Cut up.

Man these were good. Pulled off the bone with a little effort but came off completely clean.
Now on to the grate. It's perfect, it's exactly what I would need to do a larger cook with only using 1 kettle. It also fits perfectly in the 22 WSM. The only thing I would do to improve it, would be to put a bar in the front connecting the two ends for more stability.

@iCARRY,  those ribs look fantastic.  Juicy, plump, and saucy.   Have one question, did you rotate from top to bottom during the cook and did you notice any temp differences between the two grates ???  (I guess that's technically two questions   ::) )

I used mine for some St Louis Spares Super Bowl Sunday.  Since I got it, I rarely need to fire up the WSM.  It's a great addition.

I did the same thing on Super Bowl Sunday, but with two down below and one on top.
This is on my 26, but works just as well in a 22

I did not rotate them. I did not notice any difference in the ribs. I put the thicker ribs on the top rack.

That's how I am looking at it. I can use my 22 WSM for really large cooks, but now I can at least use my 22 OTG for medium to large cooks. I still love my WSM for overnight cooks or for when I want to set it up and forget about it.

My grate just came in yesterday.  Look forward to breaking it in this weekend

What is the height of the upper deck or distance to the main grate?  I'm going to chop up an old grate.

Glad I saw this. I probably own a dozen or so rib racks, but don't like any of them, at least in a kettle. It sure would be nice to be able to add another slab in my 26 without using rib racks or rolling.

It's really helpful. For a family of five it makes it so I can put everything on. A top accessory IMO

@iCARRY . Why would you want a bar at the front? Did you find it unstable? The few times I've used mine, I've never found stability to be an issue.
