« on: July 19, 2016, 04:01:38 AM »

Thanks in advance!

Medium Vortex:
4 7/8" tall
8 1/4" small opening
11 3/4" large opening

It holds 110 KBB briquettes.  A pair of Weber Baskets hold 80.

I bought the Mainstays brand stainless steel mixing bowl from Walmart for about $7.  Used my Dremel to open the narrow end and it works great.  Not sure of the exact dimensions but it's very close to the medium Vortex.  To be fair to the Vortex however, this shape of the mixing bowl is a little different and doesn't have the same versatility.

I also bought a stainless steel bowl and made my own version of Vortex. Here in Europe Vortex goes for approx.50-70 dollars which is simply insane. A bowl for 10 dollars does the same job.

10 Months on the MainStays-Poor-Tex. Still going strong. 4 dollars and a bi-metal jigsaw blade.

Full set of Stainless Steel mixing bowls from the Thrift store 2 bucks.... I have 3 sizes of Poor-tex's now
Lets just say I have acquired a few Kettles.  Big and small.   Vintage and New...  Some say I have a problem.  I find the Kettle, buy the Kettle, USE the Kettle...No problem...

Has anyone tried to take an aluminum disposable roasting pan and cut out part of the bottom and mold it into a kind of volcano shape to fit over the two coal holders?  Not sure if it would work but I can visualize it in the center of my gourmet grate like a pseudo vortex

Give it a try, Cost of entry is low.
Probably not going to work tho. Aluminum melts at low temp compared to steel.  Thin foil is just going to up and melt or oxidize into nothing at the heats a vortex works at.

Thanks about the alum melting. I was wondering if the heat would be too much. I am happy enough using my baskets in the center. They are actually quite versatile.

What Erich  said. The disposable  aluminium can't handle the heat.
