Nice old red cooker

My wife spent the week with her mom in San Jose. I had seen a red MBH on CL and my brother-in-law was nice enough to pick it up. He wasn't sure before he went, "what if it is beat up? Do I still buy it?"  I told him, yeah, for forty bucks if I don't like it I'll just sell it to someone else. My wife hauled it back today. Here is what I got.

Yeah, it's lived a life. But I'm keeping it. It's a good cooker. It cooked a meal tonight and then closed up and shut down the coals for next time.

Here it is hot. The light had changed so it's hard to see but it was a darker red.

So what do I do? I scrape down and wipe down the inside and cook on it. A couple of little ribeyes, chopped leeks and turnips, and some early corn. The corn wasn't great.

I think that this is a '78, (my HS graduation!) going by the vent guide. Why doesn't that have a link in the age guide? Or does it?

My wife brought it home, did the unpacking and then went out back to water her plants. She finally turned the corner and said "where the hell did this come from?" Yeah, Ranch Kettle. I saved that surprise and she is good with it. Actually said that I deserved it. Which is how I feel about it.

Anyway, cool old cooker that will need a handle, a hubcap, and the white Weber wheel insert and more TLC. I'm happy with it.

Oh. I didn't mention the hubcap. I started wheeling it around back and one of the wheels came off, it tilted and the lid came off and...a flower pot caught the lid safely. I need a hubcap.

That's a nice redhead! I think I see an "A" on that lid vent which would make it a 1979. Same as one of mine. Nice pickup!
