Restore Rust Help
« on: March 17, 2016, 05:04:17 PM »
So I was working on cleaning up the performer I got recently and found where it rusted through on one of the grill grate straps. It is rusted all the way through where there is a crack/hole in the bowl.

What do I do next?  How do I fix this? It is a 1995 model so warranty won't help.  I don't think I can do the bolt/washer trick because the washer will get in the way of the grate strap.

Here are some pics.

Also, for the record I have no welding experience or welder friends. I also don't have a grinder.

The only thing I can think of in a situation like that is hit the outside real good with 40 or 60 grit sandpaper and then hit it with high temp paint along the outside. VHT makes a 2000 degree satin blue. It's not gonna match at all. JB Weld makes a high heat product but I think it's only good to 500 or 550 degrees. Obviously you would just want to keep the inside of the bowl seasoned real well to prevent more rust.

And try the washer thing anyway. Maybe the washer thing with some of the JB Weld product would prevent further deterioration...

Oh, and POR 15 is a product which encapsulates rust. A lot of car guys use it. Doubt I would use it inside the bowl though.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips.  I may try the washer trick first. Part of me isn't going to worry too much about it.

No problem. Rustoleum makes a 1200 degree spray paint in black for cheap at Home Depot you could hit the outside with after you sand it down. After you do the washer deal, just hit the inside rust with Crisco :)
