Out With The Old, In With The New!
« on: August 12, 2015, 08:50:07 PM »
Well folks, I've been pretty inactive for the last month. Story is that I was called to a new church (I'm a Lutheran pastor) and things have been crazy during the transition. I'll be moving to Pleasant Prairie WI at the end of the month. I'm selling a handful of kettles to make the move a little easier (see here: http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/member-sales-trades/moving-sale!/new/#new ).

But that doesn't mean that I've stopped acquiring kettles. A few months ago, while doing a home visit with an older couple, I spotted a red 18 Wood Dale in the garage. The husband saw me admiring it and we got to chatting about the WKC, and my small collection. He said, "When I'm done with her, she's yours!" We both laughed and moved on. Well, today I went back for one last visit before the move and they gave me a thank you card (which they always do) only this time they made me open it and read the note. It said, in part, "Hope the addition of the grill to your collection makes you smile. It certainly makes us smile- who collects grills?"
Long story short, after the visit we loaded the beauty up and I have a grill, and memories, I'll treasure for a long time. Looks to be a 62-63.

P.S. I informed them that it was an elite group who collect Weber Kettles, but they still thought it was silly![emoji12]

That's a sweet Wood Dale! Looking at those bowl handles and that ash pan it must me a late model Wood Dale. About 1963

I want to be clear- this is unrestored in the picture. I got it out of the trunk and snapped this pic. Still shiny!! And @MrHoss they only think we're silly because we haven't cooked for them.

Great little kettle. @Craig - one thing I noticed right away that I don't recall discussing before is the large radius of the inner triangle elements where they cross over the center bar. We need to determine when that changed and it might help isolate certain early years. Here's my A-code 18 that has the more common tight-radius triangle:

My 60ish Wood Dale has slightly more radiused elements, but not as rounded as these. Might have to examine this more closely.

Good eye Marty! I'll need to check my mid 60s red 18 and compare to my 1980 blue 18.

Yes! I noticed that about the triangle almost immediately when I first saw it. That'd be cool to nail down.

When I was going through pastoral training, I used to HATE doing home visits.  But finding a red Woodale might change my tune forever...
