Finished my mini WSM
« on: July 20, 2015, 06:33:58 PM »
I was going to post a full build but I thought there were enough of them on this site and others.

I went with the Vasconia pot. There was only one in stock on amazon when I bought it. Using a NIB ER code SJG i got off craiglists a few weeks ago.

I cut the same size hole in the bottom and the lid. Used the rivet gun at work to stick the lid to the bottom.  Will have two grates. One will rest on the steamer indent. Other is about 4 1/2 inches down from the top. will probably make a charcoal basket of some sort soon. Pretty fun project.

Awesome build. Thanks for sharing. Did you have to do any prep to the metal in order to make the paint stick? Or isn't that necessary?

Just cleaned it up a little bit. We'll see how it turns out. Used the high heat Rustoleum ultra.

Looks nice.  You'll have to let us know how the paint holds up.

When's the first cook?

I used some expanded metal for a "basket" I measured from the charcoal grate to the bottom of the pot for the height and I left room around the edge for air circulation.   I used the steamer tray for a diffuser, some use a pie pan on the bottom grate and others don't use anything.

Haven't built my charcoal basket yet, but I do have the materials now. Did a burn on Saturday to see how well I could control the temps. I was really impressed with it. I ran it at about 350 for a few hours and then around 250 for a few more hours. Sunday, i decided to cook some Western style pork ribs, which I learned are just strips of pork shoulder. Held 250 for for the first few hours, then put them in a foil pan for with coals added to get it to 300 for a few more hours. Was really impressed with how easy it was to control the heat.

This was leftovers the next day.

Even after just one cook, I can tell this I'm going to enjoy this thing. Clean up is a breeze with the Gold version. Just a quick dump of the coals.   Next cook will probably be chicken wings.

I have heard some call theirs a chicken cooking machine.  I have used mine to do smaller stuff while my bigger smokers do larger cuts.
