Ongoing Refinishing Handles
« on: October 18, 2014, 08:48:37 PM »
I'm not sure if this technique has been posted before.
Last week I brought my 29 year old beat up, grubby handle and showed them to my buddy Tracy. She told me she use to be cabinet finisher and she gave me some great suggestions.

Before. The long handle I already started on it. Without diluting the chemical and rubbing for 15 minutes.

After rubbing them in the solution for 15 minutes the result was pretty good.

Now I need to show these to Tracy and what is the next step. She did tell me to use spar or marine varnish so handles would be waterproof.

some teak oil would probably bring more of the color out of them.  if you go thin with it and let it dry thoroughly you can put spar over it.

I only use kettles with lid bales.

Nice, it looks like that stuff works pretty good. I'm going to try it.

Brian turned me on to Australian Timber Oil, which is expensive and hard to find but which gives the handles a really rich 'wet' look, without darkening them too much.  Several days of cure with that, then a couple coats of marine spar varnish to waterproof the handles completely and they look pretty great.
One of the charcoal people.
