Shabu ~ Shabu 'Turds.................
« on: October 03, 2013, 06:30:32 AM »

I've done these from time to time, but these are the best pics I've got, the other times the lighting wasn't right or whatever.......this is from a year & some back for a buddies 50th B-Day party....

Appearently, this is something the sumo wrestlers cook up along with vegetables ( or this is the only story I've heard about it so far...)

Shabu ~ Shabu means 'swish ~ swish'.......so the very thin meat is swished back & forth in very hot broth / soup to cook it.............I spy a slightly different use...... 8)

It's VERY thinly sliced ribeye & they also had hyper thin brisket

My UPS guy told me about this stuff & where to to get it (the wife already had used it several times before, I don't remember  )
My 1st thought is: wrap around jalepenos...but1st I rolled them in this stuff ~~~>

Start off fairly hi-heat

Set up the "MacGyver" upper deck smoking rack....

Then dump in some shread.....

The smoke starts off kinda white....

But after a few minutes, it's like this ~~~>

Did some standard issue tandoori spiced 'turds, the beef ones, and some abt's withmarinated turkey strips inside...

Trundling along....

Ron's sauce on some choink balls, too!!

And beginning to load up for the party...

The powdered honey gives a really nice flavor to these without the burnt taste of overly carmelized liquid honey.....

They're GREAT !!!

PS: I tried out the skewer rig today.....
(Hi-heat grilling)

Thanks fer Lookin' !!!!

That's Genius, Buckie! Thanks for sharing. Do you like it more than the bacon kind?

That looks wonderful. Question, what are choink balls and what kind of cheese did you put in the peppers?

Lawerence, they have a much more fine-tuned window of 'done' than the bacon ones, but, if just so, they're stupendous !!!

That stuff can be had at a good sized Korean / Chinese market that knows what they're doing in re: to catering to the community......

Thanks, C_S......did some a bit ago, but the pics were bogus.....

...........Choinks are chicken (ch) meatballs wrapped in bacon (oink)......the originals, I believe were moinks (Moo ~ Oink / Beef &  Bacon wrap) & were frozen meatballs, mostly thawed so the toothpick would tag in OK......real easy & with a little sauce of your choice, a great, quick appetizer...........

Thanks, Ken......good stuff to keep folks going until a main course is ready...... 8)

 They're great, Ray !!!!

Quick to make, fairly quick to cook, good for a crowd & if you happen to run low, making up more is actually an option, unlike a lot of things BBQ......

Plus, with a signature line like yours.........they'll be right up your alley !!!!!

Some people make up their own; those one's usually turn out bigger, just 'cause it's harder to roll small ones......I'll use several different types available around here.....a standard beef 1/2oz......a "Buffalo chicken" spiced 1/2oz........or a larger 1 oz. beef one that comes in different flavor mixes (pesto /cheese, sundried tomato / different cheese, etc. )
The bigger ones I'll even cut in half & they sit flat on the grate that way..............

Yep.....that's usually how it goes......... 8)

Thanks, John.......I've always been pretty good at repititive tasks so wrapping a bunch of stuff like that don't take as long as it looks like.......doing some variations are what keeps it interesting !!!!!
