I'm in need of new grates.  Should I get Grill Grates or get some Stainless?

Grill Grates brand are great when they're new but a PITA to clean and keep usable.  I had a grease fire with them once on an old char broil I restored and they warped - being aluminum.  I've seared on a set I have for my kettles which works well, but having to clean them all the time is a bummer.

I ordered a set of these years ago for a genesis and they've been great.

I have several sets of GrillGrates and like them a lot.  I agree that, down in between the "rails" it can get a little crusty at times, but I've never let that bother me.  The "rails" themselves clean up just any other grate, with whatever type of grill brush that you use.

I've got 3 sets of GrillGrates.  The 1st was a set I bought for my old OTG and that was maybe 20 years ago.

Then they had a clearance sale on their stock sizes and I bought some for my dad's cheap gasser.  His original grates were rusted up and I just sat the GGs on top.  I brought them down to Florida after my parents passed and we were selling their house.  Those are the ones that you see on my S-i-L's that you see in a lot my cooks posted here.

The 3rd set actually came with the '02 OTP that I bought off Craigslist.

To me, the biggest benefit using GrillGrates is the flare-up control.  You can have the fatties burger or the most nicely marbled ribeye and none of the flames will penetrate the GG to burn your dinner.

That and they simply cannot rust.

As far as the troughs in between . . . GG has a funky looking tool.

I believe that this can be used to as a cleaning tool.  I misplaced mine over a decade ago.  Every now and then I'll take a wide, flathead, screwdriver and scrape in there if things get out of hand.  Also, if I have the powerwasher out, I've been known to shoot the GGs and they end up just like new.

Whatever you decide, either SS or GrillGrates will be an upgrade to stock grates.

I have GrillGrates on my old gasser sitting on top of the original porcelain coated cast iron grates that have chipped and are rusting away.
Yeah, some crud collects in the valleys but not too bad and if you oil the tops of the grates b4 use and clean with a fiber scouring pad afterward that part stays nice and clean.  Makes for Nice grill marks.
You can also turn them over and have almost a griddle if you want that kind of crust.

Thanks for the input.  I have 2 sections of grill grates that I throw on my kettle once in awhile and really like them.  And I do like the fact that they can be used like a griddle for fish and veggies.

Resurrecting this thread.  I never did buy grates and mine are falling apart.  I knew I had asked this before and couldn't find it the first time a searched.

I like the grillgrates, haven't actually used them in a while though. Yeah those valleys tend to ping crunchy cremated old food back at your grub while cooking if not kept clean, I use one of these to get in them

I think that you'll like them.  I've got set that I keep on my S-i-L's gasser.  I use them almost every weekend when I'm up there cooking.

They said they are on back order currently so I went with some stainless grates on amazon for the time being that are heavy duty and only $60.  New flavorizers, grates and grease catcher assembly and it's cooking good as new.
