2007 Performer with new style Electronic Ignitor
« on: April 01, 2022, 01:46:09 PM »
Has anyone successfully added a new style battery push button ignitor to the 2nd
generation Performer? Would like to have something reliable vs the old style push
button. I would think it would work fine but don't know if the door would clear it
when closing.

I haven't had a chance to do it just yet, but I believe it juuuuust fits.
The thing is, the opening itself is a little narrow and needs to at least have a small notch cut in it to accommodate the threads for the unit that goes through the panel.

Thanks for the info, ordered mine yesterday and can't wait to get it installed. Now I need
to figure the best way to notch it. Wonder if a Dremel tool would work? The panel is from
a 2nd gen performer and is stainless steel. May have to cut it with some snips.

Dremel ought to do it. Whatever you do, do the minimum to minimize the alteration should you change your mind in the future.

So I can report that the conversion was successful, much more than I thought it would be. I was concerned about
the door being able to close and also clear the increased size for the button. The increased size of the button wasn't
as much an issue as the door closing. The door will not close due to the design and this requires relocating ever so
slightly the button. I used a Dremel tool with grinding stones and worked to the 8 o'clock position and test fitted. Took
a couple of test fits but finally got it moved enough where the door closes and there is no interference. The great thing
about the way I did it is once the button is screwed on it hides any evidence of the hole. I highly recommend this mod
for anyone tired of the old style push button system.

Can you show a pic of the final cut?

Being this was my first attempt there are things I learned I would do slightly different,
it was a shot in the dark on the positioning, so I started grinding in the wrong area at
first. Once I started going to the 7 and 8 o'clock position it was clear this was a better
solution. My cover barely clears the tip of the button so I could have ground out a touch
more and it would have been perfect. Either way it works great and it was an easy mod
to perform. I recommend it to anyone with a 2nd Gen Performer.

As you will see in the picture with the holding ring you can see clearly the positioning
it needs to go toward. At first I was grinding toward the top in order for the larger threads
on the unit to clear, this is when I realized that the door couldn't close. At this point I started
moving toward the lower center. One point of note, depending on the position of the threads
it will allow you to get closer or further away, these threads are shown above and you can
see they standoff. By rotating you can get another 1/8" of clearance.

The new style ignition fits the SSP without issues as well.

Nice mod and great to see it applies to the Gen 1 performer.
