how clean do you need the food grill to be on your BBQ

what cleaning methods do you use

All I do is brush off old food chunks while the grate is hot. Before and after a cook.

Not very in reality.
I scrub mine at the end of every cook while the residues are still soft.
Don't forget the grill gets hot before you put food on it sterilizing it.

+1 That’s what I do. That’s pretty much what everyone does that doesn’t spend all their time on bbq forums overthinking cleaning a grill lol.

I scrub the grate with a wire brush before I light my chimney and right before I put the food down I take a wet paper towel and wipe the surface. At that point the grate is so hot it makes the towel sizzle a bit.
