I’ve got a plum colored SSP, lid code DD, and I was wondering if anyone has swapped out for the newer lid bale so the lid opens more.

It's a fantastic upgrade and a direct swap.

The old style covers will not fit though if you make the mod.  I believe another member tried using the Summit Charcoal Grilling Center cover with success.

ISO: 18" & 22" Lime, 22" Cado, Plum SSP, Clean & Colored 18" for Midget Mod, and the usual Grails.
