When I joined the WKC, I posted a picture of my WSJ and WSM. I was asked about the charcoal grate, so I wanted to post the mods I created, and have been using for over a year now. I reconfigured the 4 basic parts of a standard charcoal chimney. This made lighting charcoal safer and faster. We use our 14" WSJ every other night, and I wanted to make it easier to set up. I fixed the lower part of the chimney below the charcoal grate, shaped the charcoal grate to include the hump, kept the upper canister smooth so all of the lit charcoal ( large and small ) falls down and spreads out accross the grate, and kept the handle detached so it doesn't heat up, and allows me to simply lift the hot upper canister and set in a safe place. The charcoal grate for the 14" WSJ is the same size as the 14"WSM, so they are interchangeable, and I have the setup I need for the minion method. If i light with paper, I place the charcoal before I light. If i use a weber cube ( or any other fuel ), I place it in the lower canister, place the charcoal grate, light it, set the upper canister, and fill with charcoal. When its ready, I lift, set the cooking grate, and cook. I dont worry about hot embers falling on the deck, or flying around like it did with my old chimneys.
