My Mini WSM took down a Traeger!
« on: September 11, 2019, 08:17:53 AM »
So a month ago I was invited to a Rib-Off with cousins in Central-Coast of Cali. You had to bring your own grill, table etc.The ribs where supplied. Its 5 hour drive for me,so I packed everything I could think of that I would need.Knowing I am part of this Kettle community,I was picked on about which grill I was bringing?Well I didn’t have enough room for a grill and I didn’t want to strap one to the roof.So I opted for my standard mini WSM.I knew I could cook a rack pretty good on that thing. The wife’s head almost exploded”Of All the grills...?!”
I arrive the morning of the Rib-Off and everyone is getting set up(about 5 smokers).Well I’m getting laughed at when I pull the mini WSM out.I am told we are cooking three racks not just one! WTF?On top of that one of the guys brought a Traeger(The Ivan Drago of smokers).Lets do this.
I had a rib rack for two racks and skewers in my box so I curled the third rack and pinned them with the skewers.Set up the mini and didn’t have to touch the coals once.It stayed consistent @260 for 8hrs.We drank beer, talked shit and in the end I WON!
I’m writing this long story to Thank this community.I have learned SO much being here, from restoring, mods,to cooking techniques.Peace out

[emoji106] what do you use as a deflector?  Did you use both top and middle racks?

Congrats, sounds like a really fun day! Do you have any shots of the ribs cooking? Would love to see how you got everything in there.

How terrible was the competition? I’m just joking. Congrats brother! I feel the same about craft beer!

Sorry bud fans.

Nice work - sometimes it's better to have to think fast on your feet - no time to worry!!!  Congrats!
Wife: Let me guess... you want to grill again

That is hilarious! Too bad you didn't make a side bet that winner takes the losers smoker.  That would have really hurt! Way to go man!

I swear, when I score a great deal on a 26" I'll stop buying grills... So often.

Did / do you use : Tun can for ash clogs?
Mine didn't work for me?
Thinking of :" House of pies, no deposit return, pie tin with 20 - 30 1/4" holes?
What day ya think ( SECOND MINI WSM PROJECT?)?

Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

He’s talking about a tin can with holes punched in the side to keep the Smokey joe bottom vent from clogging with ash I think. It’s used sometimes on modified Smokey joes turned into mini wsm’s
