Starting your kettle without charcoal..
« on: October 24, 2018, 09:09:59 AM »
Hey guys,

I wanted to fire the wood dale for the first time just to heat it up and spray it down with some cooking oil. Most of us know this already, but for the new guys here, if you have a black kettle that has faded and want to bring the black sheen back “temporarily”, warm her up and spray some cooking oil on it from time to time and she’ll be pretty again.
Anyways, put the old girl back together and went to get the charcoal and realized I was out. Didn’t want to make a trip into town so I used the wood chunks the box stores carry. Directions right on the bag.
Soaked a paper towel in a little vegetable oil and put it in the bottom of the kettle then sifted through the bag and grabbed all the little pieces followed by larger.
The fire took, but I added another soaked towel and stuffed it directly in the pile once the first had burned.
I wasn’t cooking but if I had been I would’ve have added more chunks but since I was just warming her up today we just let it be, but it worked well.
Never considered using the chunks for just cooking before. Like most probably, I use coal and then add a chunk on top but it works just fine.
So, there’s no real point to this story other than I guess if your in a pinch and it’s laying around, chunks work fine!

I’m just concerned you were out of charcoal and more worrisome is you didn’t know it??  I feel naked when I get below 4 bags. You did have some combustibles though so you get a pass.

@Travis , you may have to relinquish your Webers for a couple weeks and use a rusted out charbroil gasser until you see the error of your ways, " this has happened a TIME OR TWO".......  i'm saddened and seriously question your validity in this group.

Lovin the kibble powered grate cleaner.

About 2 weeks ago I took a chop saw to a bunch of 2X2 ish
splits from the woodpile.  Ended up with a little over half a
wheelbarrowful.  Burned em down to coals and did some
skirt and flank steaks.  They were amazing.
Now we have a 30 gallon metal trash can full of chunks at the ready!

Oh, yeah.  Back to the thread.
That WW really does look grate with it's hot oil facial.

IMO, I think @Travis should be banned for a week for this serious transgression. What do you fine folk think?

Six hail Webers and a prayer to the gods of charcoal should do the trick.

That's a pretty amazing transformation.   I wouldn't have thought it would get that black.  Is the exterior kind of greasy then?  Does it rub off or just eventually fade back?
