Yellow 18 Bar-B-Q Kettle
« on: May 19, 2013, 07:31:13 PM »
So I picked up the yellow 18 today.  There is significant missing enamel near one socket.
Also, the legs are in the wrong sockets. It was missing the ash pan. The owner found it in an old house.  The previous owner left it there.

Here's a few shots before I did any cleanup.

I did some cleanup including using a  wire wheel on the triangle, rinse the excess ashes from the bowl, polish the vent and give the handle a sanding, stain and sealer.

Nice clean up! I just think these don't take the heat, IMO. I think that is what causes the crazing. It has some dings, but it is saved! Congrats!

That's a dandy yellow. I love cooking on my 18 bc of how it changes color to orange. Enjoy!

Are you saying the yellow handles heat differently than other colors ?

Based on the age guide I assume this Bar-b-q kettle with pat # is 1971 - 1975 .

Any input to the age would be appretiated.

Thanks.

Yep, and I bet Javahog has enough class to not turn it into a flower pot!

The reds and yellows and other colors all change hues when they get hot. My red turns to almost a purple color when it gets hot.  Yeah Buckie, a purple haze.. I have never cooked on my yellow..
I'm not the best on aging a kettle. I believe that Craig has to be one of the experts

No, IMO, I think the fruit colors just didn't take the high heat well.Crazing seems more prevelant on them. Great Rescue!

Java, check this thread.  http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/determining-the-age-even-more/msg33110/#msg33110

My red 18" looks very similar to your yella.  Only mine has the smaller vent tabs on the bowl.  Craig puts mine in the 73-75 range.  In my completely uneducated brain, I'd guess the wider vent tabs would make your yellow a bit newer.

I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!
