i was finally able to try this contraption out... it worked great! I could see why so many people enjoy the SNS. Really gives a nice big concentrated area of blazing hot heat. I should mention too, although unplanned, it perfectly took a full chimney of charcoal.

I'd like to do this when I get some free time and the requisite expanded steel, wire, and a new cut off wheel for my angle grinder.

I now have three ash can supports that lack ash cans (!) and since I don't think anyone sells just the ash bucket by itself, the support ring is scrap material looking for a project like this. Or maybe I'll just ramp it up and use all 3 for one basket, making it better insulated so as to concentrate the heat even more. Just talking out loud at this point.
