Vent Knobs
« on: July 28, 2017, 11:15:43 AM »
Tired of burning your fingers on those hot vent tabs?

Well...heres something else you can burn your fingers on.

Theyre easy to install and all the parts are available at Ace.

I drilled a 3/16" hole in the vent and painted the hardware.

Its odd how fast spray paint dries when you get some on ya, but takes forever to dry on anything else.

If you go to Ace to get the parts make sure everything screws together before you leave the store, because there are a few different thread count sizes available.

All my hardware on this is #10 X 32 (10 is the diameter and 32 is the threads per inch) and the screw is 1 1/4" long.

Cool. What is that ball used for other than this?  I've not seen one although I guess I've never looked either

I think they called them oven knobs on the pull out trays in the nuts & bolts section. There were a few sizes and styles in there.

These ones have brass threads inside but they dont give me the impression they are Bakelite or actual oven proof plastic.

My staycation starts tomorrow so we'll find out about thbtchsleavin:30 am tomorrow.

TROY!!!  Hell Fire's talkin' about his balls again!
Make him stop!

That really is a neat idea.
Moves the activation of the vent away from the heat
and really makes bottom vent much more accessible.
Gives a bit more leverage as well.
I am SO stealing that!

I see the same width and pattern as what are used in Performer tables. I believe 1/4 20 got a really short bolt and used a lock washer on one if my Smokey Joe's. Thanks short distance makes it really Stout and no adverse effect on the knob even with high heat searing.

I used mine the other day @~400* to cook BSCT. The knobs worked perfectly, no burning & no melting.

I saw someone that had a great idea that I want to copy for my JJ bottom vent. They made almost the same thing but used a Weber SS ash sweeper handle and tapped threads on it and used a SS nut. Looks super cool and it's longer for under the JJ.
Now I just need to find a handle to sacrifice for mine.

That's not too shabby, but close. I mean more like the one in the photo here. I'll get a better angle tomorrow.

Looks like those balls can really take some heat.
