Rust Stains Around Handle
« on: June 13, 2017, 10:30:59 AM »
I've been cleaning up a 91 OT+ and have not been able to make progress cleaning the rust stains around the lid handle. I've been using a razor scraper, steel wool, and dish soap. Anyone had luck cleaning this type of stain??

Should I try CLR or barkeepers friend? If the later, powder or liquid format?

Thanks!

You could try squirting, dabbing or whatever some evaporust on there. May take a few applications since it won't be submerged.

Go grab a bottle of navel jelly and leave it on there for 24 hrs, wash it off, oil it up. I had to do this to an outrider I got cheap, every hole had rust and rust stains and the navel jelly took care of both.

I was in the grocery store and they had powdered barkeeper's friend. Tried that mixed with a little water on a sponge. It worked wonders. Here are the results:

Thanks @Craig.  The kettle is an N-Code so the handle didn't come with it.

@cwestsmokin and anyone else contemplating barkeeper's friend.  Use it with care... http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/help-barkeepers-friend-left-a-stain/

There is some stuff (rust nutrilizer) that really works incredibly well. I don't know the brand. You can find it at Napa I bet.
You can take a ear swab and dab as little on all effected areas. It nutrilizes the rust stopping it in its tracks. It's not paint but acts like as primer.

I use barkeeeper's friend in powder form, make a paste of it, and place it on the rust for a minute or two then rinse or wipe it off. Repeat as needed. Don't rub it in as it's mildly abrasive and can dull your kettle.
