SS grates pitted like rust ?
« on: May 05, 2017, 07:48:11 AM »
Looking for an answer to why my Weber SS grate is pitted like it has rusted and when not used for a week it starts bleeding orange/yellow ?

I have a Master Touch with a Weber SS GBS and that looks perfect after 2 years.

These are photos of my 18 inch hinged grate.

Also had the exact same pitting on 1 of my 26" grills with SS grate.

Has anyone ever seen this before, and why ?

Seeking a Black Sequoia I know I know, I'd settle for just the tabbed no leg grill

You sure you don't have real rust on plated steel grates? To best of my knowledge GBS grate ie nickle plated steel. I would steel wool or sand smooth if they are. If grates get too pitted they hold too much grease and don't wipe clean. Brush food off after cook and oil. Wipe clean before cook. Buff off any rust that gets started, usually over fire area where seasoning gets burned off. They will eventually season up nice. Sometimes I think plain steel would be better because they season well after they rust a little and the nickle comes off some. I would treat Stainless same way.

This is my SS GBS grate and my 18" is the same steel but just a hinged grate.

Just to clear it up, pitting is on 18" hinged grate, not on my SS gbs.

Cast iron frying pan is similar. Really nice if seasoned good. Get it too hot and seasoning burns off. Let cool after cook and brush with stiff nylon bristle brush and cold water and seasoning won't come off. Warm oil and wipe oil off with paper towel to store. You can do a quick wash with not to warm water and a dash soap, rinse well and fresh oil before using. Seasoning won't come off. Always use a good oil. I use bacon grease on skillet but don't have a problem with can spray on grates. I don't spray on pit. I will use SOS type pad to clean if really dirty. Just gave a friend a seasoned grate that wanted to replace one that had rusted thin bars. It was all black and cooked excellent.

Yeah, Hopefully Stainless won't rust. But I would still Brush and wipe clean. My GBS grate is plated( I think).

Where did you get the 18 ? I might want a stainless one? If it is Stainless I would ask Weber about what it could be.

Not U.K. , I'm now in The Netherlands .
The 18" is original from a 2006 18" premium grill.

Weber #7434 is the hinged SS 18"

Could just be low quality SS.

Possibly contact with salt or bleach?

That doesnt look ss to me..it looks like rusted zinc plated steel grates

18" kettles dont come with ss grates.

Where did you buy your grates from...weber OR online seller?.

Id be suspect that someone swapped out plated steel w
for ss ones.

Easy test....test your grates with magnet..if you get strong magnetic pull..they are not ss grates
