I'm a lucky guy. (lots of pics)
« on: September 13, 2016, 08:17:36 AM »
My wife's Grandfather passed away recently, after a long and happy life. Over the past 10 years or so we have visited them often. Every time we were there he would tell me that he had some old bbq stuff in the storage box on his deck, and that when he found the key he would let me take a look at it to see if there was anything I might want to take. Needless to say, in all those years he never found the key, and he would not let me cut the lock. After he passed away, my mother-in-law told me to go ahead and cut it, and to take whatever I wanted.

This was the first time any of these items had seen daylight in at least 15-20 years:

You can imagine my surprise! He had a Weber 1000xl sitting under a cover next to the box, so I figured he might have a grill inside the box too. A nice Redhead MBH that looks to be from about 1979:

But what really got me excited were all the Weber accessories that were mostly NIB and never used:

Charcoal rails:

There was even an old bag of KB with some woodchips and starter fluid:

I wiped her down and put on the accessory table:

And had to cook on her that night:

I was truly blessed to have known this man, and I know that he is smiling down on me, knowing how much I will enjoy his Weber Legacy!

First of all, sorry for your loss. Best to your wife and family.

Second of all, this is cooler than cool! Hope there are photos of him commanding the redhead. Memories like that would compliment this stash nicely and keep his memory alive. Reminds me I need more of myself at the grill. I'm always the one taking pics.

Thanks for the condolences, I have never seen any pics of him grilling. I forgot to post the pics of the 1000XL I am also getting:

It also looks like it was hardly ever used.

Your wife's grandfather will be proud that all those Weber items will be cared for and put to good use.  He was obviously a Weber guy.

Beautiful grill(s) and story.  What a legacy.

It's like Al Capone's vault except actually something in it.  Again, sorry for your loss, but really a great story.

Wow...... what a find

He would want you to enjoy every bit of that.
Except use that charcoal starter for a campfire starter.

This would be an incredible find for any kettlehead, but your personal connection and the fact that it wasn't just another craigslist or storage locker score is what makes this a truly special and incredibly touching story.  Thank you for sharing it - you made my day!
