Not Good. At All.
« on: October 11, 2015, 01:09:15 PM »
I started cleaning my CL Platinum today; step 1 of my planned refurb job.
Turns out I should've looked underneath the table more closely, with more light.
When I had scraped off a lot of the junk clinging to the inside surface of the grill bottom I knocked off a piece and found a rusted hole underneath one of the tabs that hold up the top grate.
Looked outside and saw another spot that's nearly rusted through, plus some serious scrapes. See:

Should I try to replace the bottom half of the kettle (it's black)?  Shoot.

Total bummer but I don't know what to tell you. Other guys know a lot more about rehab/repair than I do. Good luck!

Maybe time to swap in some color...otherwise finding black bowls are pretty cheap.

Got one like that before. I would just use it as a cooker and consider it another vent hole.

Forgive my ignorance (I've got plenty), but when you say "use it as a cooker," is a "cooker" different than just a grill used to cook steaks burgers etc?  (;-) I know, I'm a rube).  In any case, it seems like I'd want to avoid cooking on a wood deck!

"Swap in some color" -- as in find a used kettle top/bottom that could be installed on a platinum?  Are the Performer kettles interchangeable with mine?

I'm torn about how to proceed here.  I like the Platinum set up and I could continue on undaunted.  But maybe that would be good money (and energy) that would be better spent on another unit that's in better shape to start with.  I really do like the SS Performers ...

I say Frankenstein it out.  Pop rivet some steel patches over the holes/weak spots and she should be good to go.  On second though maybe bolts would be more appropriate for Frankenstein  ;)

you could use a bolt/ nut and washers to patch the holes

I'm not sure i could get a bolt/nut/washers combo to fit in that crater, since the strap/tab holding up the grate inside is located right up across the rusted hole.

I used 2 bottle caps and a self tapping screw to cover a gas burner tube hole

IMHO a cooker is a grill your not afraid to beat up and leave dirty after a cook. However TO has a good point, just patch it up and fire it up.
Good luck

Cook on it until you find another Platinum grill that the cart is trashed and transfer the bowl to your cart!  :)   Or you could place a WTB (want to buy) ad in member deals section and see if anyone has either just the bowl or lid and bowl! 8)
Wanted: 18" Platinum any color will work
This is my Kettle there are many like it but this one is mine......

I'd put this magnet over that hole (close up the hole in the middle with a small bolt) and continue to cook on it. m.harborfreight.com/66mm-round-magnet-96650.html?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F in the meantime keep an eye out for a replacement bowl.
