Used Some Doritos to Get Charcoal Going
« on: May 09, 2015, 01:21:26 PM »
A buddy had told me about a video that he had seen about this …. I was curious, so I googled it.

Found this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWd5ccwgUBU

I had to try it.  Works great!  I always use my weed-burner to get charcoal lit.

I am a charcoal miser, so I try to save as much from each cook-up by sifting it in a homemade sifter.
I have found in the past that re-used lump takes a bit longer to light, but not too much.

After hitting it with the weed-burner for about 25 seconds (much shorter than normal), I let 'er go ….

Getting ready to light.

After 2 minutes there was still some of the Doritos burning.

Ready to dump after no more than 10 minutes.

Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?
A: When you are not allowed to question it.

My dad was also a charcoal miser. He had a metal can with a tight lid that he put the used lit charcoal in just as soon as he finished cooking . Myself I use a piece of charcoal bag in my chimney starter .
Neat trick using the chimney starter upside down
Not surprising that corn chips burn as some pellet stove can burn corn

Cheers

I like doing that when lighting a very small amount.  Works great.

Here are a couple of my sifters.  The one also serves as a charcoal basket in my 18" or 22" kettle.

If the chips get broken before the chimney is full do you start over with new chips or just burn the broken ones?

Are those the "Fire" flavor chips?

You can't always get what you want....but if you try sometimes you get what you need

Hey Ray, you were the inspiration for that 2nd pic above.  Being a charcoal miser has its advantages.  :D

The Doritos chips essentially turn to dust after not too long …

I tried this method again tonight, and the smell is horrendous, to say the least …. and it really isn't any faster.

I'm guessing it's a great method when "roughing-it" and such, but that's not really not my style any more.   :-\ :o  ;D ;) ;) ;)

Fritos work also. Both have a nice corny smell..

Our scout leader preached about packing a bag of Fritos along in case of emergency , food and fire starter he said , lot better smell than lint out if a dryer unless you leave Fritos in your pocket then it's a win win lol @ troy

i'm a fat guy, there's not chance of ever stocking doritos or fritos.
they can be plain and stale as hell, i'll still end up getting the munchies and eating them.

How dare you.  Such a waste of 5 Doritos.  Hope they weren't Nacho Cheese.
