That was awesome!!!!!  I'll never be able to do this though...I failed basket weaving 101, so while I could make the charcoal, I wouldn't be able to make baskets to store them in.  LOL.  Oh well, buying charcoal from the store it is!

Not easy finding a 30 gallon drum in metric Canada.  ??? :-\

My mother in law makes it between two corrugated metal sheets, like roofing sheets. Makes a sandwich out of it. Between the grooves in the sheets and such there's only enough airflow to burn it down slowly, which is I suppose what chars it. I've cooked with it; it works. But I don't quite know the whole process.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch
