Half my family is from the South: Mississippi and Tennessee.  Mom always said you have to eat black eyed peas for New Years to have good luck.   Got mine just now.

What do you eat them with?

Wings and ribs for us. Not-so-long-standing tradition, est. 2021.

Alabama and Mississippi here.... Collard greens and black eye peas are insisted upon yearly by my wife.  I'd rather have a foot long chili dog lol.... Going to work leftover prime rib into the menu Sunday for sure, undecided what it's going to be.

According to mom, you eat them with New Years dinner, whatever it was.  They don't taste particularly good, but mom insisted they must be eaten to have good luck.  It's a Southern thing.

I think mom used cocktail sauce to spice them up.  I'll probably use Franks.

We also eat black eyed peas for New Years here in Texas. My mom makes them with roasted tomatoes and smoked sausage. Very tasty.

Blackeyed Peas, cabbage, and corn bread down in South Louisiana, and yes you gotta drop some crystal hot sauce on those peas!

We are cooking white beans and cast iron  crawfish cheddar cornbread for our new year feast!

You need to use dry black eyed peas with any of the following for flavor: smoked ham hocks, smoked ham trim, fat back, smoked pork jowls, bacon or southern smoked sausage.

Give the dry beans a try, I'm sure you'll agree they're much better than canned.

We use a smoked pork tasso, ham and/r smoked sausage

Our New year tradition is a black eyed pea dish called Hopping John. We use ham hocks and greens ( mustard greens, kale and / or collard). Basically it's like a bean soup which we serve over rice.

I grew up in the desert southwest. In my younger years we'd eat menudo (beef tripe) on NYD. Yup we were hung over college kids.

As I got older and settled down with my first wife her traditional NYD meal was tamales, carne asada tacos with pinto beans and Mexican rice. She was a gringo haha

I moved to North Florida 13 years ago, my second wife's tradition is a straight up southern.
Pork, black eyed peas, mustard, turnip or collard greens, white rice, southern cornbread (no sugar) and sweet tea. (I'll pass on the sweet tea)

Dessert a piece of warm buttered cornbread with Tupelo honey.
