DATE: Saturday, June 24
LOCATION: San Pablo Dam Reservoir (7301 San Pablo Dam Road, El Sobrante) Picnic site #5
*There are two entrances to this reservoir. Do not enter the one with the sign for boat launching. That is at the wrong end of the lake and does not access the picnic area. The park charges $7 for entry per car.
Bring your rare or favorite kettle, food to cook and beverages to drink. Beer and wine
are allowed to be brought in. Everyone is welcome as we should have plenty of space. The picnic site reserved has 4 very large picnic tables covered with a gazebo. There are additional picnic tables close that we can use if needed. Details will be added as the date gets closer. If your planning on attending, please let me know on this thread. I am trying to get an idea of how many to expect.
Here is a menu sign up for the day so everyone will have an idea of what is being cooked/brought. Figure cooking/bringing to share. Copy and paste the sign up list, adding your WKC name and what your bringing.

It is 500 miles from my house to exit 154 (Yoncalla. Oregon). Eugene is about 45 miles further. I've made that drive many times as my Brother-in-law has a ranch in Yoncalla.
@Cellar2ful; That's about 11-12 hrs, one way, to get BBQ food (noting that I can get BBQ food right here on my deck :) ). We'll have to leverage something more, better, prettier (as they said in Pirates of the Caribbean). Hummmm, maybe a Dark Blue, or Yellow, or Dark Green 22" MBH kettle ;) 8)
Still a maybe ...
SJ
I'll be there.
Can't wait. I'll be there.
count me in!
sooo how does food and stuff work? bring for yourself to cook and just chill with everyone or bring more to share around pot luck style? first meet, wanna be (over) prepared
What he said ^^^^^
This will be my first WKC meet also. I would think you bring to share. I will defer to
@pbe gummi bear and
@argentflame for input. A menu sign up list probably will be good. That way we won't end up with everyone cooking the same thing. I'll start with a side dish Mrs. Cellar2ful will be making, as I have not decided what to cook yet. Just copy, paste and add what you will be cooking/bringing with your WKC name. My original post has also been updated with the menu sign up list.

This sounds about right. Most people will cook on site but that's not a requirement. I suggest not cooking anything that takes >4 hours. If you do, plan to show up early.
@mirkwood
Having hosted a Meetup in the past, (and likely this year again sometime) and attended several others, I suggest planning for leftovers - have containers or zip-lock bags handy, and plenty of ice in the coolers. Pace yourself with the food, and cook in waves, not all at once. It's no fun to feel stuffed when the next great recipe comes off the grill. Cover all the food groups if you can: Beef, Pork, Fish, Foul, Lamb. Get some dutch ovens going for beans, soups, stews or deserts. Go easy on breads and chips to leave more room for meat. Sample everything you can, and take lots of pics. Wish I could join you!

Yes.....it's the only receptacle I have that's big enough for this wacky activity..... 8)
so it was mentioned in the Chicago meet up thread about food stuff. instead of bringing a main dish would it be better to bring an assortment of sides?
What say we start getting an attendance roster and menu lined up? Just copy the below attendance and menu, post it and add your name and what your bringing. I have tagged as many local folks as I can remember. If you know someone that might want to attend, please tag or mention them. How much I/you will be cooking will be determined somewhat by the numbers attending. Keep in mind there will be a lot of people grilling up a lot of food. I will provide the plates,cups and utensils (for eating not for prep or cooking). BYOB (beer & wine).

Crap! Thanks Darin, now I'm in trouble with Karen for making her miss the Bacon Festival. We would probably have gone to it. Maybe next year.

Would a move to the Monterey area be a bad idea then?
I'm in Antioch and Monterey is a 2 hour drive. San Pablo res is already an hour plus for the Sacramento guys.
So, should we just add bacon to everything?

I just called and spoke with EBMUD. Looks like everything should be fine for this Saturday. The predicted temperature for San Pablo on Saturday is 79 degrees. They are currently at a Level 1 fire alert with this heat spell. No smoking (cigarettes or ganja) within the park. Charcoal BBQing is not restricted at this time. If the local Fire Department raises the fire danger to a level 2, then charcoal BBQing will be restricted. I will check back with them on Thursday and Friday to make sure we are good. If it looks like a Level 2 is going to be in effect, we can have a show and shine with the kettles and bring the food pre-cooked. Pretty much all we can do if it happens. No matter what, the beer and wine will be cold, food great, kettles in their glory and plenty of food to go around.
Because of it's close proximity to the Bay, it is much cooler in San Pablo. Only 78 there today now. Here is a link for the temperatures in San Pablo.
*"Spare the Air" alerts do not currently apply to charcoal BBQ's. Per CARB (California Air Resources Board) charcoal BBQing restrictions will be included within the next few years in Spare the Air days.

Hey @Cellar2ful can we cook on propane with a L2 alert?
Just talked with the Park Headquarters again. Understandably, they are reluctant to say what the restrictions might be for Saturday. There is a forecast of possible "Red Flag" fire danger on Wednesday and Thursday due to high winds combined with this oppressive heat. They are going to call me Wednesday or Thursday and give me an update. I have everyone's phone numbers and emails that have signed up on this thread. I will let you all know as soon as I hear something back.
To answer your question Gummi, if there is a Level 2 restriction in place, it may be possible for us to use propane BBQ's. To early for them to make any decisions though.
Anyone planning on coming that has not signed up here, please do so I can notify you of any restrictions or cancellations.
@austin87

@1buckie That could be great news ... all of those cherry yellow, blue, lime colored
charcoal kettles may start to pop up on CL for very good prices :)
On the other hand, ya might have to restrict your usage of KBB ...

Kettle karma is strong! We are good to go for charcoal BBqing this Saturday. Park District HQ just called and said there will be
no restrictions on charcoal use for Saturday. I will have a propane torch available for starting charcoal. Weather service has predicted a cool down for the area. Forecast high for the San Pablo Dam area is around 80 degrees for Saturday. I am planning on being there to start setting up around 10 AM. See you all there.
