@Shafzilla details please :)
Haha. Way to put me on the spot.
@LightningBoldtz informed me last night (8:00pm Thursday) about this red head near me. Guy had it on CL for $40. I probably checked craigslist 20 mins before it was posted online. I hopped on it instantly. I got a reply within a half hour or so. He said he had someone who wanted him to hold it until Saturday but couldn't put a deposit on it. I told him I'd give him $50 if I could grab it today. He agreed and picked it up on my lunch break today. He said he bought it a few years back at auction (didn't tell me how much for) and had never used it. Just been sitting in his barn collecting dust.
It needs a good cleaning and a new hinged grate. No dents or serious scratches. A little rust on the rim of the lid, but not an eye sore whatsoever. All in all its in great shape. It's got the metal bowl handles and a patent on the vent. This tells me it's between 70-78, correct?
I'll post some pics once I get it cleaned up.
Thanks again
@LightningBoldtz !!
The wood handle on the lid is still in great shape as well. Probably doesn't need replaced... but... those handles you guys keep posting look mighty fine...
Sorry, I had to do it. This looks like an excellent score. Can't wait to see it all cleaned up.
Total score! Congrats!
Nice!
Congrats Shafzilla! And props to LB for yet another cool move. Your Karma tank is overflowing my friend!
A bit of #0000 steel wool will probably remove the rust at the rim too Shaf...
I bet the guy on the shitty end of the stick is mad as hell!
Let me go check and see if hes starting a thread in online finds...
Haha. I apologize if it was another WKCer, but only a little bit....
So I pulled the legs out. They're not terrible. Going to use the "how to restore the legs "article posted here. They weren't too tight. Is there a way to keep them snug when I get them polished? Bowl vents are in decent shape. Also missing a hubcap. Going to look for some replacements. Any suggestions? Bowl and lid look like they will clean up nicely. Need to stop and get the steel wool tomorrow. The only blemish is a little gash in the lid and the white paint on the wheels is pretty faded. Repaint or replace?
Also, any recommendations for a cap for the leg without a wheel?
use a piece of 5/16 diameter fuel line to keep the wheel on until you score a cap

Zip Tie works decently
That is a sweet redhead.
Nice score..you can also cut duct tape half the width and then loop the duct tape tight 3-5 times and that wouldnhold the wheel cheaply for casual movement.
Lowes and hd usually sell 3/8 axles caps in fastener section..but they are white or nickel plated...1.15-1.35 per cap...

Let's get some pics posted so we can see what is going on.

Bowl shouldn't be too hard to clean (crossing fingers)

Bottom dampers all still work. A little tight, but I think they'll be good after cleaned

What a beautiful find! Helps me keep hope alive, I was just checking craigslist before this...no such luck today.
I thought it looked nice from the initial post but man seeing more pics almost makes me wish I had taken the 120 mile round trip.....
Regardless, I am so glad a grill fella got it.
could you get a better pic of the lid vent?
And that handle is in great shape,
@MrHoss made one like that look like new.
I'll post a pic of the vent tomorrow. Gotta spend time with the wife/in-laws tonight. Going hardcore on it tomorrow. Cleaned the inside of the bowl and lid this morning. Came out immaculate.
Beautiful condition! You really scored a sweet one here Shaf!

Wheels cleaned and repainted

Triangle took about three hours including an extra trip to Menards. This was by far the hardest part. Can't tell from the pic, but it's no where near perfect.

Stained and polyurethaned the handle

That's one fine specimen you have there!
And..........
......where's the box it came from the factory in?
that looks brand new !!!!

It really wasn't too bad. I followed the guides here on the site. I maybe spent $50 or so on supplies. The next one won't cost nearly as much. I'm well equipped to take on another one now. ;)
Seemed like a great day for a picture.

great job
@Shafzilla !
some aluminum polish (i use mothers) will get those legs shining like chrome. it also works wonders on the triangle when applied with 0000.
what a great score, that's a beauty of a redhead.
That cleaned up real nice, great job! Props to
@LightningBoldtz for the tip on this.
nice looking Kettle
I got really lucky with this. Now that I've gone through a thorough cleaning, I think I have a better idea of what to look for before handing over the money. (Which is the opposite of what I did when I bought this one)
Great looking kettle! I need to get cleaning mine also.
