Will this pork taste like beef?

Thin Blue Smoke

So I am trying the snake method today on a pork butt. I kept telling myself, counter clockwise, counter clockwise! So what did I do? Lit it clockwise, of course. I think there was some kind of gravitational pull creating a disturbance in the force (did you feel it?) causing me to start the snake clockwise. Just getting around to posting picks but the temp has been rock solid with no fussing for over three hours now! I am loving the snake!

The set up.

The subject in place!

Big red helping with the lighting.

About three hours in.

I'm surprised you had to light any coals to start the snake - it's like 150 degrees in Chicago today! Keep that in mind when you see how fast the snake burns, and be ready to add some coals, or maybe just open the lid and let the sun bring it up to temp.

Not to worry.......someone else....maybe even me, will lite one counter-clockwise, rather than curse the darkness & it will all level out.....globally speaking, that is.......... ;D

i thought of just using a magnifying glass the other day when it was 109....... :o

Nice Butt, so far...... ;D

The outside temp today is certainly making it easy to get up to temp. I just extended the snake to make sure we could keep rolling steady. ;D

5 1/2 hours in and internal temp is about 150. So, with the temp outside today, it is about room temp.... :o 8)

Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Ron.   ;D

Dude, relax your chicken.

Thin Blue Smoke

Yes....thanks for the safety reminder!   ;D

Off the kettle, ready for pulling after a short rest. It is falling apart in anticipation.

The final presentation.

I can report that it still tastes like pork. I didn't cross the streams but I did reverse the snake direction close to the end. I felt like a rebel!

It was very tasty!

Pork looks fantastic!

Can I ask what the thermo you are using on the grate is?

Thanks, the thermo is the maverick 732. Just took it on its maiden voyage and it worked great. I guess I will see how it holds up. I had a lot of stuff going on while I was cooking and it was very nice to have the remote to carry with me.

Hi, sorry, I meant the analogue one. :) been looking to get one that will last a while and most sem to only be good for a short time. Yours looks nice and seasoned.

Ah, no problem. I think I got lucky with that one because it has stayed pretty consistent for a while. I got it at the beginning of the summer at the grocery store and have used it regularly. It is an oven thermometer and has been very close in readings to other thermos. It was about $6.00.

I have another one I use in my house oven that has been going strong for over a year.

They are labeled with the generic "good cook" brand.

For six dollars I don't expect a whole lot but they have done pretty well.

Delicious looking plate-up! Nice job on the butt.
I have yet to try one on the kettle. Can't go wrong with the snake method.  :D :D
Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?
A: When you are not allowed to question it.
