Using KB?

Full lit chimney, wide open vents enough to get that heat? I need it for only 10-15 minutes.

Yeah, that probably would be pretty close, maybe a tad more coals.....this sounds very pizza-like.... 8)

quite often I'll set in some unlit & dump the major amount of lit on top, covering completely, then wait just a bit....if it's too high, choke bottom vents a bit......

Full chimney lit will do. You may need to prop the lid a little while(after fuel dump) to get up to temp, but once it is there it should hold.
Might even have to damper the bottom a little.

Not pizza, buckie. I want to make hamburger/hot dog rolls while I'm grilling the burgers/dogs. ;) I made the recipe last night in the oven to see if they were any good so next step is to try on the grill.

I just sit the grill out from under the porch.  In july it will get that hot without lighting the charcoal.

(Just kidding, but a full load of KB will get t 425 if you let it really catch before lidding it.)

Yeah, that should work. I did this around mid March, so still cold out. Grilled some steaks.
Full chimney of RO briqs, some small sprinkles of lump. Vents wide open.
I'm sure the grill temp was hotter than the therm reading.  :D
