The Traveler

No, not D&D or Critical Role

The new Weber Traveler

I'm not going to explain myself, but I wanted one ever since I saw the ad campaign - took it hook, line and sinker (and especially since my wife asked "that's nice, are you going to get it?")

Cleaned up the Q200 to give to my nephew, and then waited for the price increase to buy it   ::)   (actually Weber raised the price, then released it - oh well).

Anyway, it's a nice machine -- and I like it -- so I guess that's what counts.

Picture heavy unpacking and first impressions...

Of course I needed help.

Very well packaged.

Someone at the factory licked the lid, but it rubbed right off.

This is how we roll.

"OK, Papu. Listen, this is a grill"

Axle caps.

Tech Tip #1: put the axle cap on after you thread the axle

"Look, it spins"

ZOOM

It won't lift.

Tech Tip #2: Unlock it - duh

"Yup, you did it right Papu"

Looks like a Q.

You missed it, but it was a slo-motion drop and auto lid lock. There are plenty of videos online that show the drop.

Still looks like the Q.

Grates are heavy - both are identical.

Grate locators

ZOOM

Look closely - just a little bigger than the Q200 one piece grate.

Oh, there were instructions?

On High with a 1# propane canister, pegging the clock took about 7-9 minutes. Took another 4-5 to drop.

Lid feels like a kettle lid - no extra insulation or weight.

Fits nice in the shed

Sorry for all the pictures (but not really).

I’m really liking this thing

Gets hot off the 1# canisters and easy to cook on

Simple cooks so far - I’ll need to work on something more creative when I get some time

Dude, relax your chicken.

Looks really nice!  I've been tinkering around with a Q2200 I got for $30 and it is pretty heavy with the cast iron grates.  I like the look of that one - very sleek, and the portability is nice I'm sure.  Nice cooks too!

Traveler played a supporting role yesterday

Bread. Corn on the cob and fruit for grilled Sangria

Corn was inspired by a Weber email.

Grilled Sangria was inspired by a Weber IG post. Grilled pineapple, orange, apple and nectarines with Pomegranate wine from Casa de Fruita down south.

Sangria was great! Finishing last glass as I type this out while waiting on the sunset with my wife

The Weber Traveler will be available for sale here in Costa Rica in a couple of months and I will be taking a serious look at this portable grill.

Looks like a nice complete package that is compact. Will have to take a closer look if the need arises.

I appreciate your write up.   I am curious to understand if the price is aligned product.   $325+ for a portable grill seems high although I realize it can easily be used as a standalone.  The main issue I see is there’s a one burner.   How easy is it to do indirect cooks?

Yeah, the price is high, but it’s a Weber (sorry, couldn’t resist)

I’ve had several Q’s and they’ve been great. I knew this would be too.

I’m still very happy with it. It’s a great cooker. Will it replace my copper E330? Probably not, but that’s because I have a modified GBS system in it (for a CI wok) and I can limit the burners used because of the N/S burner configuration. I also have a Bakerstone box in it so it’s acting as my little oven.

Indirect is not an option. Just as it wasn’t really with the different Genesis grills I’ve owned. The E/W burner configuration doesn’t necessarily lend itself to indirect cooking, although you can turn off individual burners on the Genesis.

And using the Q’s, it always felt like wasted space when I wasn’t using the entire grill.

It’s become my go to gasser when grilling for my wife and I.

Just need to get more creative on taking up the entire space when cooking a meal.

It also seems to keep the heat well when turned down, while referencing the highly accurate lid thermometer 🤪

I should try to monitor grate heat on one of the next cooks.
Dude, relax your chicken.
