Aluminum legs on kettle.

Just a quick question for everybody. Are the legs on the 1986 "H" code Weber kettle solid aluminum like the older models or plated aluminum.

Refinishing some oxidized legs and don't want to mess up the finish if I decide to sand.

They are aluminum.   Not plated.  You can clean with steel wool.

Thank you.  I restored a 74ish red kettle last year and sanded the legs. Still deciding to do the same for this red "H" code.

Love the "000" and "0000" steel wool. Works wonders.

I have found that the very stubborn ones can have oxidation removed quickly with 220g on a DA sander, then OOOO steel wool, then buff on a bench grinder with buffing rouge. Any rouge that is stuck on after buffing easily is removed with mother's aluminum mag polish. Maybe not a solution for everyone, but they come back to mirror in about 15-20 minutes per leg.

Left is complete after buff, middle is intermediate da sand, right is how they looked before any work done to them.
